If we decide to show our dog, what colors do judges prefer and or accept. Our "golden" is very red. Many people ask us if he is an Irish Setter. He is definitely a pure bred golden (I saw both parents at the breeder and she is a very reputable breeder too!)
He has a gorgeous golden "block head" and is very intelligent. And as many Goldens tend to be, he is also an attention whore (I say this affectionately of course).
The extend of showing him would be local shows (We're not headed for Westminster here)

One Judge may prefer golden and another red. The main object of a show dog is quality and near perfection for the breed. Inquire on your favorite search engine, and you will get a wealth of information.

You have a Golden Retriever that is from American Blood lines. Which are bred more for sport then show. I also had a Red Golden, very hyper but a very nice dog. Do you have AKC paper for your dog?? You will need these to show your dog in any AKC show. Check the Breed Standard on the AKC web site. www.akc.com

This is what your standard says about color. Note that darker coloring is considered "undesirable". That doesn't mean it's a disqualification however. I'm getting into showing Labs and I've been told to study the breed standard as one would a Bible so I'll advise you to do the same. Welcome to the wonderful sport of showing dogs!!!

Color
Rich, lustrous golden of various shades. Feathering may be lighter than rest of coat. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized according to its extent. Allowable light shadings are not to be confused with white markings. Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity. Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair is a serious fault.

You will have NO luck in the show ring. If you visit a few shows, or watch them on TV, you will never see a red Golden winning. It is the very light, almost blonde dogs that do the best. Do not waste your time. Also save yourself the staring that will be seen if you enter the ring with one.

Uh..hello?..."GOLDEN" retriever???
Color is the LEAST of a dogs faults or virtues, even in a "color" breed.
GO READ THE BREED STANDARD!!!
Goldens are VERY hard to finish since there are GAZILLIONS of em!
There's gotta be a HUGE number for a major in just about every division. You can look *that* up at the AKC site as well!
