Check with a computer repair store. They might have a hard drive with XP already installed using one of their licences to give to you. You must make sure though that they are licenced to do that and that they must give you a Microsoft booklet with the Microsoft logo on it and a product ID# that you can use to register the copy.

No, usually a hard drive is sold without any software installed. I never came across a case in which Windows XP was pre-installed. Usually, you purchase the hard drive and install it then you install any software. I am curious. Are you using a desktop computer? If you are, check to see if you have a empty slot (a.k.a empty bay) for an additional hard drive. You can have Windows XP operating system files installed on your master hard drive (i.e. Local Disk C:) and install the new hard drive and call it Local Disk B:, or something like that.
Do you still have your old Windows Installation CD, the one before purchasing the Windows XP upgrade CD? You can install the old Windows OS and then install the Windows XP upgrade. It should work.
Someone mentioned Norton Ghost, which is a pretty good idea. Unfortunately, it is somewhat expensive for a software that you are probably only going to use once (starts at about $29 USD) but not as expensive as purchasing a Windows XP Installation CD (starts at about $89 USD).

No. But if the install of Windows XP is working ok on your old hard drive, you can use a program like Norton Ghost to make an image of your old hard drive onto your new hard drive. This way you don't have to reinstall anyway. It will run XP just like on your old drive. You'll now just have more space.

Ifyour current hard drive is working and you only need the new hard drive to increase storage capacity. Simply install the new hard drive and put the jumper in the slave position with the jumper on the existins one in master position. When you boot up the computer windows will detect it and install it as a Hard drive with a letter designation being the next letter in the alphabet IE on most computors the main hard drive is designated with the letter C so windows will install it as drive D. Simply go to my computer and right click on the new drive and then click format then select whether to format it as FAT32 or NTSF file system (NTSF is the file system to select as you will be able to get a larger partition and the files will be compressed so your files take less space..at the prompt click on set maximum partition and format useing NTSF file system. then after the hard drive is formated you will be able to move files from the orginal drive to the new one. Also you will be able to install new folders and files as if it was the orginal hard drive. Windows will run and operate on your computer no matter which hard drive has the programs or files you are useing.

What hard drive? Well you don't mean the hard disk do you? Why you have to buy one? I'm a computer expert but NEVER experience something like that. You don't have the copy of an original "the full version one" than you have the upgrade one? Did Microsoft send you the upgarde version one? I really like to help you but i don't understand your problem.

You can install XP as a new install IF you have the win98/95 cd or 1st disk.
I wouldn't recommend transfering you image of unless you are very certain its ok and if an image program can even read the old harddrive.
Some new harddrives come with a transfer program too.
