i bought a used phone at a yard sale. the phone works and the answering machine part works fine, but the display on the handset that shows the caller i.d. and the phone number you are dialing, does not work at all. is there a way to fix that or do i have to just go without?

As long as you as you can make out the manufacturer's name and the model #, go to the manufacturer's website and under support look for the manual. Most makers have them ready for download in the pdf style file format (Acrobat)
If the phone is corded, there won't be a battery to fix it. If it's cordless and works, it has a battery but you have a problem with the display.

Sounds like its a seperate battery issue. Look up the manufacturers web site, a manual should be available or in the least their toll free number, one call and they can tell you what it is. The batteries can be weird!

I went to BestBuy to see if there is the same phone, make, model etc just ask the clerk to make some copies of the owners manual, and he did! I did that twice already and they always where very nice.
