Hit clubs in and around the Village. Many of them will be gay, but there will be some others. You have to eat at this Mexican place near the Empire State Building. I have forgotten what it's called but they make great tacos.
A walk around Central Park is essential. Also, take the subway to Ground Zero. Drop into Centry 21, a great, cheap place to go clothes shopping, and head through the financial centre to Battery Park. Walk along the water front until you hit the Liberty Island ferry. This ferry costs, but it does take you to Liberty Island and Ellis Island. If you just want a decent view of the Statue, take a free ride on the Staten Island ferry and make sure you sit on the left of the boat (left from where you got on it).
Another great plan is to take the subway to Brooklyn Bridge. Cross the bridge and come back over to Manhattan (the bridge isn't that long). Then have a walk round the City Hall area (surrounded by a green space) and check out the courts close by. Head towards China Town and walk through Mott Street. Take a look at the Eastern States Buddhist Temple, it's really beautiful. After China town you're in Little Italy. Eat here. It's fairly priced and the food is delicious.
The Empire State Building is a must-see. If you have the time and money, do it twice; once during the day and once at night. The experience is very different. Alternatively you could do it once and just remain on the promenade on the 86th floor throughout sunset to see the city in the day and at night. It really is worth seeing, such a beautiful sight.
I hope you love New York as much as I did.

Times Square for cheap musical tickets. Open top red bus tour on first day. Take 2 hrs to go uptown from Times Square then the rest of the day to do downtown. Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty can be done down there and if you want to clothes shop around Noho and Soho there are some good shops and stalls on the street. Yellow Rat Bastard shop is cool and Century 21 is great discount place across from Ground Zero. ?Baseball at Yankee Stadium or an event at Madison Square Garden. Obviously Empire State at some point-can take 2-3 hrs. Actually just sitting having a coffee in any Starbucks and watching the people walk by is so good. Have a nice day (or 3)

I will assume that you do not have an unlimited budget. So take the ferry rides they are very inexpensive; Statue of Liberty, cruise around Manhattan. Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum,, New York Museum of Natural History, and Rockefeller City. In September, if it is cold, they will put the skating rink in Rockefeller City and they have great shows daily. You can, if you want, ask your University to arrange a day pass for you to visit the United Nations. You can also buy a Manhattan Tour bus pass and tour the city. You can also go to City Island by train if you love seafood. Seafood is cheap up there. Your best bet is to go to a Visitor's information booth or go to any hotel lobby and ask for ideas on things to do. You cannot get bored in new York City--it never sleeps.

The question is what isn't there to do?
Depending on your interests, you can go anywhere from shopping in the city or watching musicals in Times Square. Once you get there, you will have so many options you wish you can stay longer than 3 days! Just a tip, try to locate free magazines given out daily by the subway entrances. In it, you can find plenty of coupons that can save you bucks at museums and restaurants!
Enjoy your visit!

Go visit some skyscrapers and look at all of the observation decks. Keep an eye out for low flying aircraft though, in nyc they can be a hassle.
Then of course there is always the subway. Go there and ask the guy slouched against the wall about his idea of a good time. =)
Hope this helps.

Go to Chinatown to eat at an authentic Chinese restaurant. To tell if it's a good one, look in the window. If the place has no asian people in it, move on.
Greenwich Village is a great place to visit. Lots of clubs and bars and such.
