I'm not a doctor, but if you are uncomfortable with his diagnosis, do get a second opinion. It can't hurt and may relieve your stress.

It is perfectly normal for your doctor to want a renal biopsy. 1.7 is a high creatine, with 1.0 or less being normal. Lupus is a very serious illness and there is a VERY high rate of renal failure and need for transplantation. A kidney biopsy is not a big deal, I had a transplant 17 years ago (kidney) and developed kidney cancer 7 years ago in the transplanted organ and had a biopsy. It's done with ultrasound guiding. The tissues are numbed with injections (not painful), then a needle biopsy is done of the kidney, not painful at all, and the procedure is fairly short. Anything that you can do to prolong the rate of kidney failure is well worth it...you do not want to go on dialysis any sooner than you need to, and transplantation is not a cure, but a treatment, and brings with it it's own set of problems.

My daughter went through this same thing just a year ago. One doctor told her she had cancer and wanted several biopsies, even a bone marrow test! She was SOOO ill, the tests would have possibly killed her. We got a second opinion, never went through the process, and she is now being treated for another rare condition that has been diagnosed and she is now doing quite well. NEVER do invasive procedures without getting several opinions (not necessarily only two), and try finding innovative doctors to work with you. Here's a link that may help: http://www.lef.org/doctors/directoryofdoctors02.html .
Also, I did much personal research myself on my daughter's illness. The internet is a source of so much good information. I became more schooled than most of the doctors about her condition, and know that I helped to save her life by doing so. Please take the time to learn about yourself and what they are asking you to do.

With lupus, the number 1 killer is kidney failure. I highly recommend the kidney biopsy. You should know if you have any kidney disease now, so you can work towards not going into kidney failure. Lupus is a tough disease on all your body systems, but especially your kidneys. I trust in your doctor when he when suggests a kidney biopsy for any lupus patients. Good Luck. and God Bless. Keep your head high throughout this disease process.

I think you're worried about getting more sick and longer recovery time after the surgical procedure, but the stress from worrying can also make it worse, and you need to do what will be better overall. If what is better overall is to end the mental worry by getting the biopsy and doing your best to recover, enlisting help from friends or family if needed, then it should be done. Coz it's better to have a functioning kidney with bodily stress after surgery than to worry yourself sicker and make that kidney work harder. I think. But I definitely understand your concern.

Hey hon well sorry about what your going through if your not comfortable than i would definitely get a second opinion although sometimes its good to just get these kinda things done in order to maybe rule it out! and by the way you can't take a creatine supplement (found at any health food store) alot of body builders use it in fact i do just so i can workout longer and it takes like fruit punch!! but never the less i wish you luck and hope every thing comes out okay

To ease your mind get a biopsy and see what it means. After that take your protocol and get a second opinion from a specialist. Early detection is the best way to go.

Get the Biopsy, it could find a hidden problem. If you didnt have lupus i would say get a 2nd opinion, but since you have a serious illness its best to get it checked asap.

when the doctor says, he wants to do a biopsy, it means that he wants to find out the condition of your kidney. i'm sure that your doctor knows what he is doing. if you want a second opinion, go to another doctor....they will be able to help you in your decisions.
