My daughter and I were born in Canada. WE are now living in Idaho with my husband. I was told to get a social security card I would need a letter stating that my daughter and I have 50% Indian blood which I showed them and got our ss cards. I applied for SSI benefits for my daughter and was told that I needed a letter saying that I had to have 50% American Indian blood. Now we are being told that we shouldn't have got our SS cards because our letters say we have 50% Indian blood and not American Indian blood.

No, American Indian means Native American as in US of A, not of the 'Americas'. Other than the 'United States of' modifier, it is the only name we have.

Sort of like the United States of Mexico, which everyone calls Mexico.

SS is a US governmental program and those from Canada don't get it any more than our being born in North America entitles us to your health care (much as we might wish!)

Unfortunately, the United States has laws on who can be Native and how. You'll just have to get a paper that says American Indian blood. I had to do the same thing when I wanted to apply for scholarships. Apparently, having relative on the reservation wasn't enough. I needed proof of my race.
