I'm thinking something like winemaker's glue, which used to be flour based. The web's no good because it's too stuffed full of people trying to sell me labels.

So just mix up some flour paste. That's how you make papier mache'--haven't you made pinatas? Make a slightly thick liquid (like, a light sauce consistency but not quite gravy-thick) from plain (not self-rising) flour and don't smear it on too thick--it takes too long to dry. Millions of Spanish class projects can't be wrong!

Flour Paste
Ingredients: ½ cup white flour
2/3 cup water

Directions: Mix the flour and water together until paste has a creamy consistency. Add water by the drop or flour by the teaspoon, if necessary, to improve consistency.

Important: This recipe must be kept in the refrigerator so label the container clearly. You may add a few drops of Oil of Peppermint to act as a preservative.

Make Your Own Sticker Glue

Materials:

2 tbs. vinegar

1 packet of unflavored gelatin

1 tsp. peppermint extract, vanilla extract, or any flavor you like

Procedure:

Boil vinegar in a small pan then turn the heat to low.

Add gelatin to the hot vinegar and mix until dissolved and add the flavor.

Extra glue can be stored in a tightly sealed jar for later use.

To use the glue again, place the jar in a pan of hot water.

How to Use:

To make stickers, brush glue on the back surface and let the paper dry. It may curl, but will straighten out when dry.

When the paper dries, cut out the stickers, moisten and place the stickers where you want.

This also works to make labels. Children love to label their things.

here is a link i found(i typed in "homemade glue" on yahoo search):
http://www.make-stuff.com/formulas/glue.html

i have used the paper mache` glue before(for paper mache, nothing else), and when it dries, it get's really hard--works well! you could also use some super glue, that sticks to everything.

i hope everything works well for you! i love making homemade preserves. i usually just get color coded lids and rings(red for strawberry, etc.) or write on top what it is. but if you are going to give them away, a label would be a nice touch. good luck! :-)

I have not used this recipe in years, they have changed the flour all-purpose flour isn't the same, they have remove some of the gluten so it may not work as good as it used to.
