I've come across piss and vinegar (rowdiness, basically); the vinegar on a sponge can refer to the crucifixion or as a cleaning method; and "how do you like them apples?" can indicate surprise or it is used as a taunt to soneone one has surprised and/or beaten badly.
I've never come across the three together, though I can follow the logic from piss and vinegar to vinegar on a sponge to apple cider vinegar to how do you like them apples. I'd like to hear more about this if you find the connection between them.
