Several years ago when the first wave of Hmong immigrants arrived in my town, the government built 10 houses and provided cheap rent for them for awhile so they could get settled in. This is good for the immigrants, it will allow them to get on their feet and find work and such. The houses they built were not fancy but they were nice, and everything in their neigborhood was clean and well kept for awhile. It has been five years now and the places are a disaster. Every house has all the copper and windows ripped out and sold and there are so many junk cars and garbage near the houses it makes the entire 5 block radius an eye sore. None of them work, and the neigborhood is now a crime filled drug den and the mayor and governor have done nothing to stem this parasitism. A person in town petitioned the city council to demand a cleanup and the city dismissed it immideatly. It is the same in many towns around mine and it is getting sickening. Does anyone have a similar story or problem?

I am not complaining about it, I just wondered if anyone else has a similar situation near them. I honestly think it would be better to make immigrants work for there stature in America because if everything they need is provided, they will not realize they have to work to make it in America.

daljack sounds like a good American. You are exactly right. You can't expect them to make it with absolutely no education on HOW to make it. They need to learn what it is to provide a life for themselves and their families and not have everything handed to them. How can we expect them to learn if nobody teaches them?

Your city made the same mistakes that mine made with the public housing, low-income housing, etc.:
a. Although the homes were intended for short-term stays (I'd say they intended it to be for a maximum of five years), many people live there for their whole lives. The government should help people if they come by hard times, but only if they are willing to get off their lazy asses and work to get out of them. When you study for a test, you don't stop studying if someone comes to help you- the same concept should be applied here. Here, there are also people who are second, third, and possibly even fourth generations of illegitimate children in some of "the projects" and the low-income housing. At the rate the homes seem to be going in your town, you are going to be seeing a lot of this.
b. They don't do drug tests- drugs are illegal, and people who break the law should not be getting money from the government. I'd go as far as to ban alcohol and smoking in them- if you can afford luxuries like these, you can probably afford to feed your family.
c. Our cities do NOTHING to force people to take care of what it gives them. When people don't have to work for what they own, they feel no need to take care of the things they own. (ie. The home, appliances, etc.) They never get past the level of children- they spray-paint just like children write on the walls, they don't clean up after themselves just like children ("The city should do that" is probably the most common thought in your city just as it is in mine- very similar to when little kids assume "Well, mommy will do that for me"), they break things and assume that they will get new items just like spoiled children, etc. (At our middle school, we have to do volunteer work. My friend and I work at a day care every Friday for an hour- I can honestly compare the people living in these homes to the three, four, and five year olds that go to the day care in the ways that I mentioned and possibly in even more. Since these people act like children, they must be treated like children. If a 4 year old wrote on the wall, for example, you’d punish them- another concept that must be applied here.) Our cities need to make people keep their homes- and the area around their homes- clean.
d. The government needs harsher restrictions on welfare- people shouldn’t be able to plop out several illegitimate children and expect the taxpayers to support the whole family. Since welfare money (when it comes to families) is a per child situation, they should make it a law saying that only wedlock babies count. Also, for as long as welfare money is available, lazy people will CONSTANTLY flock to it- to them, money grows on trees and falls with the rain. Collecting welfare was something people were once ashamed to do- now, it’s become a lifestyle.
e. As far as crime goes: If they get arrested, the government should stop supporting them- they bit the hand that fed them. If they complain, the government should just tell them “You should have thought of that when you *insert crime*."

-Also:
a. These people always claim that it is someone else’s fault for their present life- these people need to be taught that they must take responsibility for their own actions. Of course, this list would be dubbed “racist”, so of course little can be done.
b. Illegal immigrants don't deserve ANYTHING- they are ILLEGAL. According to the image that pro-illegals push, all illegals have jobs- Therefore, they don't need any aid. Also, I have already mentioned that people don't take care of what they own if they don't have to work for what they own: Most illegals DON'T take care of America (nor do they feel any loyalty to America) because they don't have to DO anything to get INTO America.
c. My ancestors came here through Ellis Island from Poland and Germany: They lived by the values of Puritan work ethic- the same values that this country was built on. They never accepted a penny of welfare- I don't see why today's immigrants should be treated differently. Also, what ever happened to Puritan work ethic? It seems to be a quality that few people today possess.

It's funny you mentioned this, as we have a similar problem here with the ever-growing Somali immigrant population. (I live in Columbus, Ohio.) These people have come over and taken advantage of government subsidies, and a prime example is with the housing. They have a low-income housing complex about 10 minutes from me that was originally planned for more of a senior citizen population. Well, the Somali's moved in, and now two and three bedroom homes have 9 or 10 people living in each of them. These units are overseen by HUD. They were brand new and built less than 6 years ago, now they look horrible, as the tenants have no owership or pride in them, so they don't care, and management is too frustrated to deal with all of it. Now, the Somali's have petitioned HUD and local housing authorities to allow them to have additional units for subsidies rent, or to allow them to break the rules regarding the number of people who can live in each unit, saying "But this is our culture". That's garbage...THIS is OUR culture in the States, and we don't allow 9 people to live in a 2 bedroom apartment! Deal with it or, here's an option: get a job, stop depending on the resources I pay my tax money for, and get your own house.

I hate that our government allows immigrants to come over and get hand-outs, when citizens can't get half as much as they do (unless they have a bunch of children with no father in the home and qualify for welfare!).

Note that I am not against immigration, when done legally and properly. I am for immigration, as I think a diverse culture contributes to a more egalitarian and democratic society (though I believe we now live in a limited democracy, not a democracy as the Constitution intended); however, I am totally against immigrants coming here, using up resources that could help people who have WORKED and PAID TAXES in this country, then abandoning those same resources and NOT giving back when they have taken all they can take. It takes a morally bankrupt person to do that, and I think this same thing is going on in your community. They've been given everything, so what did the city expect? Now it's a problem, and everyone suddenly wants to wash their hands and admit no fault or part in the malady.

When people don't have jobs it's kinda hard to landscape. You don't "plop" people down in a strange country and say Ok we gave you a house now you're on your own and expect them to thrive.

I look at the immagrants where I live and I see how they take care of their families and their homes. They're starting their own businesses. Why....because someone was there along the way when they ran into trouble.

You can always find what you're looking for if you look hard enough. Look for some good you may be surprised.

i know exactly what you are talking about! i grew up in salt lake city rose park. my parents moved there when i was first born and it was one of the nicest neighborhoods in salt lake. after 10 years Mexicans started moving into the houses that people were moving out of and it just got worse and worse. by the time i was about 10 there had been 2 drive by shootings. a bunch of drug busts. loose rottweilers running around everywhere. it was disgusting. every house that had Mexicans in it had their cars parked on their lawns. the grass was yellow their houses were filthy looking just from the outside. it was so sick we finally had to give up and move

Happens all the time. Any time you give somebody something for nothing, there is no incentive to take care of it. That is just one of the problems with a welfare state.

if everywhere you go people have car accidents is it stupid to force offenders to attend drivers class?

If domestic violence is everywhere, is it stupid to force people into counseling?

If Al Capone took over the city of Chicago, was it stupid for the federal government to take him down?

what will you do about your city?
