Ok, he probably needed space, but he should have explained why, He also should have assured you that your relationship was not in trouble, but he realizes that him saying to you " he needed space" and he calls you because he fears losing you.

He isn't totally sure he wants to be with you, but he knows he doesn't want to lose you either. It's up to you whether or not you want to let him have the cake and eat it too. Him asking for space could mean that he has done something and needs to be away from you for a while to digest it. He may be feeling guilty and calling to keep you around.

Maybe because he cares and wants you to know that he does. Just because he says he needs space doesnt always mean that he is done with you and wants to be totally alone. He wants you to acknowledge that he still cares about you and maybe even misses you.

Cause maybe he misses you and thinks that it was a bad idea after all because he feels better by your side but he just doesn't admit it

BUT I WOULD CALL HIM AND FIND OUT WHAT GOING ON,
