It is safe. I live in Shanghai. Only once did someone try to steal something from me. A camera from a locked bike basket. Fortunately the thief was thwarted as the camera strap was also locked. And this was in Yangshuo not Beijing. I think phone theft and bike theft are the two most common crimes I know of. Crossing the street appears more dangerous than it is. There is a large Muslim population.... but I dont think they have some huge problems with foreigners or Americans.

Yes, they are very nice to Americans. I bought this shirt before I went to China and it had part of an American flag on it. My dad told me I was not allowed to wear it there. Well when I got there I made sure that I wore it at every major attraction that I could to prove to him that it was safe. It was funny when he got the pictures and saw it. There is a big muslim population in Xian but it is safe there also. If someone did anything to you they would be thrown in jail and they know it. Just keep your guard up at all times, lock your door etc... Basic saftey things. Most of the people there are very poor and need money and such.
One more thing after reading the other answers. If you do rent a bike or anything make sure that you secure what ever is in your basket. I met a girl that did have her things stolen from the basket when she was riding her bike. They just grabed it when they went by her.

Yes. Of course. This is 2006. The largest American Chamber of Commerce is in Shanghai, moving Hong Kong to #2. The city of Gauanzho is trying to rival that. In Beijing you would think the "crane" putting up new buildings is the national symbol.
I can' t speak for the far away places but I have been to the places I mentioned.
More importantly the Chinese, especially the young, love everything America stands for : freedom. innovation, creativity etc
Go there . Learn , teach, expand,

if you're goning to move to beijing, you need not to be too worried. beijing's a big city, and it is our capital city. so people are well-educated. anyway,if you do not offend them, they wouldn't offend you, either. but you've got to be concerned about the cultural differences. if you cannot understand something, just ask them, they will help you. then little understanding can be understood. most chinese are quite friendly . but when you get along with some students, you 'd better be modest and kind. if there're some students that are impossible, you may just be more kind to them, and talk to them. that'll probably help. by the way, i'm a chinese girl. trust me. hope this will help:-)

No, it's just like America. Beijing is pretty diversed, so yeah. Well, I don't know that there's a large muslim population, though. There's a heretics religion in china called Falun Gong, it's pretty scary, people burn themselves.

What there to no muslim population in china or if there is there is very little. You will be safe and happy so long as your polite to people you meet and stay out of trouble else they will kick you out of the country.

No. Anecdotal evidence suggests it is not as safe as people think it is. For rich expats in gated communities with guards and drivers, it is very safe.
For everybody else, it can be very dangerous.
Many crimes against foreigners don't get reported by either the media here or reported to embassies. Petty crime is not even taken seriously by the PSB, from theft to assault.
And then of course, American' s seem to think nothing ever bad will happen to them personally, which leads them to do silly things to endanger their own safety...

Many foreigners cannot differentiate Japanese from Chinese from Vietnamese from Korean... They all look alike.
Same to the Chinese community...the white folks in Germany look like the ones in Britian or US or France...
Besides, China is one of the few countries where racial discrimination does not exist.
Don't worry, you are safe.
