I guess you mean in the UK?
From September, any child that is under a certain height (can't remember if it's 135 or 140cm) will have to have a booster seat to travel in the car. Mothercare, Toys R Us, etc. have height stands in store, so you can check your child's height. I checked my sons in Toys R Us. He's 8 and just over the required height, so I'm OK. My friends son though is 10 and will have to have a booster - he's disgusted!!!
If it saves lives though....

there is no 'wrong type'
If the child is under five they need a full child seat.
If they're under ten or under a certain height they need a booster seat. Sit them in the car with the seatbelt on and no seat. The seatbelt should go a hair below the breast bone

All I know is that in Utah they just changed it. It used to be at 4 and 40 lbs they could be in a booster instead of a 5 point harness but now it's 5 and 40 lbs.

If Your on about in the UK, as of September then under 12's or less then 4 foot 3inches then you have to have at leats a booster seat! If your unsure then you can go local mother care and ask for advice (there are other shops that will help but cant think of them at moment) and i THINK you can go to local police station and ask.

Laws differ by state in the US, and by country. If in the US, many police stations will inspect your car seat and tell you if they're OK and installed right.

Well, i heard that you must be 4 feet tall to be in a car (whilst being driven) otherwise you can get arrested.

I don't know where you are but in Florida, you can go to any fire station and the fire person there can tell you if it the right one for your child. They also make sure that it is installed correctly.
