There's a number of ways to look at this. Was the gravity of your illegal action so serious that the police are looking for the perpatrator? Are you facing jail time?
Was someone hurt by your actions? If you did something felonous, perhaps society as a whole is better off with you behind bars. But are YOU better off behind bars? The answer probably is NO. Prisons are horrific, and staying out of them is a very very good idea. Moreover, having a criminal background--even probation for a misdemeanor--can keep you out of the workforce for a decade or more.
Here's my advice: If you hurt someone physically, and the police are looking for you, you will probably get caught at some point in the future and will best serve yourself by coming forward.
If you stole or damaged something, please replace it, fix it, or give whatever it was you stole back.
If nobody knows you did it, or it was some "crime" that never hurt anyone, then just go have a talk with someone you trust and respect to work out your feelings. Some illegal things are stupid.
If you're asking this, then you probably are introspective enough to know what to do on an ethical level at least.
Good luck to you!

It seems like a small crime. Maybe buy 10 times that much stuff at dunkin donuts for some cops and consider it absolved. No need to explain, just say you are thankful that they do their jobs. Or, just bake one thing yourself and give it to the cops. Same exchange value.

Nah! I watched alot of cop movies... they get it free anyway. Well... not all cops get free dough nuts. By the way, what the hell were you doing in a cop's car? The dough nuts are usually on the front seat. The cops car is not an airlines that give you free snacks!! Did you stop to think that that was their meal for the time of day? They are very busy people on 12 hour shifts helping to keep our neighbourhoods safe.

First of all, you should stop doing illegal stuff in the future. There is a reason why the laws were made.
Secondly, think about how to best rectify the situation. If you stole something, give it back.
Thirdly, it's up to your own morale judgment to decide whether to turn yourself in.

Well, it really depends on what you did and when.
Ethically, yes, you should turn yourself into the authority
with jurisdiction.
If it was long enough ago (beyond the statute of limitations),
they won't do anything to you, but at least they can take it off
their list of unsolved crimes (assuming it ever made it to the list).

If you were honest you would. But, then, if you were honest, you wouldn't have stolen the donuts in the first place.

Depends on how serious it was. Stealing a piece of candy isn't bad enough to turn yourself in.

Crabby, never, never, NEVER EVER EVER EVER turn yourself in. You have got to pull it together man!
It is only illegal if you get caught. And should you get caught, lie. Once you lie, you have to live the lie man.
You can do it. You can get through this, and we will help you help yourself.
