What makes you think that current apes are a step below to us? That's not what the theory says.
The theory says we have a common ancestor but moved in different directions, in other words, modern apes didn't exist 800,000 years ago, they evolved too as we did, but in different directions and ramifications. Evolution doesn't have to direct an organism to be "smarter" through evolution, actually, organism can evolve to be dumber if that helps them to survive. Bonobos and humans have a common ancestor, that doesn't mean bonobos didn't evolve, they actually did, but in a different direction and once an specie evolves or split in two different species they can't jump from one branch of the phylogenetic tree to another.
If you think evolution proposes that "chimps" will eventually become humans then you don't have a clue about what evolution is all about. As previous sugestions, go back and read a book about evolution.

The ape family is NOT inferior, simply adapted to a different environment.
Millions of years ago, there was a common ancestor between us and the apes.
It is theorized that something changed in their natural environment, and a large group of them got separated from the rest. Perhaps a giant earthquake ripped a large hole in the ground, no one really knows for a fact.
One part of this species was left in the jungle, to live in the tree and go on to evolve into the species of apes and monkeys we know of today.
The other part, due to the separation, had little jungle left, and was thus forced to move into the grasslands to find food. The tall grasses and limited resources proved to be difficult, and so through natural selection the species came to walk upright and use tools, making the best use of their resources.
Eventually, the species spread out to new areas, populated the world and came to be known as humans.
Of course, it's all a theory, so there's still a possibility that none of that ever happened, but it makes sense to me.

It's appalling how much ignorance there is on this site. Apparently those who keep trolling for Darwinians never passed freshman biology.
1. As others have pointed out, evolution has no direction. No one species is superior to another; each is fitted to its own environmental niche.
2. Again, WE DID NOT DESCEND FROM APES. We all had a common ancestor. Humans split off from the other primates 8-10 million years ago.
3. Many people question evolution because they do not understand the concept of "survival of the fittest." Fitness is defined in terms of the offspring you are able to produce. Those organisms that are best adapted to environmental pressures will produce the most viable offspring, thus continuing their line, i.e. their genes continue to survive.
A fairly recent example of evolution in action is the peppered moth in England. In the late 1800s most peppered moths were white - a perfect camouflage against the white bark of the trees to which they clung. The few black moths (a result of random mutation) were easily picked off by birds before they could reproduce - thus they were not as "fit." Then came industrial pollution. Tree bark was darkened by soot. Over a few years, the white moths became more and more visible against the darkening bark and were picked off by birds - leaving the darker moths to survive and propagate. Now the peppered moth is primarily black, because the white ones did not live long enough to perpetuate their genes. The moths didn't think about this; sexual reproduction guarantees a different mix of genes in offspring, and the few random black moths lived to breed more black moths. See?
It's ironic to realize that in a nation that prides itself on its level of literacy, only 1/3 believe the theory of evolution. Another third are undecided. Every other developed county except Afghanistan accepts it...because it has been scientifically validated. Scientific theories are subject to testing and falsification; creationism is not.

Evolution isn't working towards an end product. There is no "inferior" or "superior" in nature. There are niches in every environment and a creature would evolve to fill that environmental niche. (To reduce competition.) Even us as humans could further evolve.
"Survival of the fittest" doesn't work as you'd expect it to. For example, a fish would develop lungs to better survive out of water to fill that niche. Yet there is no need to leave the water since it is still an environment to live in. So that is why there are still fish and there are also land animals.
EDIT: To ST JOHN
As opposed to the creationism model that is constantly modified to oppose every evolutionary counter-arguement?
The nature of a scientific theory is that it is modified every time new evidence is introduced. Of course that makes more sense since the theory can change, or be thrown out altogether with new evidence. Unlike your religious dogma.

Why do you see the ape family as "inferior". YOU try living in a tree! In your version of evolution it would seem to me there would be only ONE species on the earth. The "superior" one. That's an idea I've never heard suggested before. I suggest there's lots of empirical evidence to the contrary.

Who said that they are inferior? What makes you so pompous as to think any animal is inferior to you? All creature have evolved to suit their environments. Apparently we needed a bigger brain to survive on this planet. They do just fine with their survival. Don't get it wrong just because we are not Apes, we are still Primates. There are several different species that are primates, all with their own distinct qualities and levels of intelligence.

They keep adding to this puzzle. Now some of them are claiming that we did not come from apes, but apes and humans had a common ancestor-hominids. All the hominids found so far have turned out not to be hominids but---apes.
When evolutionist get into trouble -they just add more theories to confuse.

inferior to us, but much more advanced than other species. what you obviously fail to realize is that evolution is not one straight line from point A to point B. your tunnel vision on this matter precludes you to assume that everything has one end. fo ryou maybe or whatever your little book tells you. all evolution takes different tracks and occurs over millenias. I know you believe that god just snapped his fingers and turnon the lights and created the world 500 years ago? hmm. that's sounds much more feasible and more logical right?

I can not say it any better than other already have, I can tell you to go back and read the answers then read some books on the subject. You clearly need to educate your self about evolution!

I just hope that honesty and openness (as opposed to rigid attachment to one's beliefs and opinions) prevail when you consider the answers. Jade provided an excellent response and it addresses exactly the points you raised in your question, without resorting to ad hominems or other attack. Here's hoping that you bring Yahoo! Answers to a strong high ground and choose honesty and correctness over ego and emotion.
