Austin has a lot and is growing.
However, I dn't recommend random searching but pick a city, a great company, and a good growing industry and then figure out what it takes to get hired there. It will give you much more happiness.
I live downstate from you near UI - there's a growing research park there with some engr jobs and few experienced engineers around (mostly students).

Instead of the hit-or-miss you will get with a quality job hunt through an internet site, try a local or national company such as Lucas Group. They do have a website, but it's not automated like Monster, and you will actually get attention from a person.

I live in Wichita, Kansas.... home of Cessna, Raytheon, Learjet (Bombardier), Boeing / Spirit, Koch Industries. Engineering jobs are everywhere around here. Home prices are very reasonable, too.
