I usually give my kids a wind down time before starting anything they would prefer not to do. If they choose to do their chores, for which they get paid for as well as doing their homework WITHOUT HASSLES, that is their choice. I live close to the school, so, they have free time until 4 PM, then it's supervised homework till 5 PM. If it isn't done by then, I go in and out as I'm doing dinner. If the homework isn't completed by 8 PM, which includes dinner, then the assignment isn't finished and my child has to explain it to the teacher.

I hope this won't come out the wrong way or even in a mean way! :)
I have to say that your son should do his homework when gets home, It would be helpful to give him something healthy to drink to help him feel energetic again after a day at school .. reason i say he should do his homework right away before anything is everything he has learned is still fresh in his mind :) if he was to do his homework after dinner he will feel slow and heavy because the body is using all that energy to digest the dinner .. he'll never get his homework done then and be distracted .. and when he isn't in the mood to do homework he'll be in the mood to watch a tv show or play a game on the computer ..
As far as chores go he can do some chores after dinner (assuming he has already done his homework before dinner time) this will be good because it'll set some structure in his life which will be very important as he reaches college .. it will prepare him to be on his own :) he'll even thank you for it too!
good luck :)

I think homework should come before chores and dinner. The earlier the homework is done, the less tired the child will be doing the homework. He'll be able to concentrate better and make less mistakes. Maybe a snack when he comes home and then right to homework.

It's important for him to do his homework right after school while his mind is still in school mode. After his homework, then he can have dinner and then do his chores or vice versa. If he does his homework later, he may not feel like it, or be too tired. When he gets home from school have a place ready for him at the table. Set up pencils and erasers and a healthy snack. When you stick to this routine, he'll get used to it. Make learning fun and help him in anyway you can!

Doing homework on a regular basis at the correct time creates the stability for future a work environment, with that said i do understand that they are young and tired when arriving home so it is best to do homework as soon as they get home. Serve a snack and sit down with them, as they do it. Give them some free time after then proceed to serve dinner and then chore. At each interval you are showing them what will be required of them through out life... thus creating a balanced adult

i have noticed that this schedule works well for the boy that i babysit who has ADHD... have him come home and have a snack and relax for 15-30 minutes, and then have him do it. don't get him involved in anything, or let him turn on the tv in the time between coming home from school and starting homework. you can tell him that if he just buckes down and does it now, he will get it over with, and then can have the rest of the day to play... i would have him do chores after dinner, so between finishing his homework and dinner he can play.. and then after dinner and chores have some down time reading or watching a movie..

homework right after school. It's the most important thing so I would say homework after a snack but before dinner and chores.

Homework should be done before anything else. If done after school it gives the family more time together before bed without rushing to get the homework completed. Sometimes it cannot be helped...something comes up, but it is a good habit to get them into.

I would give him some blow off steam time when he first gets home. Boys usually need some physical activity after sitting all day. Set a routine and try to stick to it. Some kids like to do their work after dinner, some like to start at 4:00, ask your son which he prefers, that way he had some input and might take ownership of "homework time".

I think when he gets home he probably wants a break from school so don't make him do it right when he gets home. I think after dinner is best because he really should be getting ready for bed after dinner. Dinner, family time, homework, bath, bed is usually a good schedule to go with. Hope I helped :)
