You really can't do too much with a broken toe, unless it's broken within the foot itself. If anything I would suggest just taping it to a good toe. That's pretty much the best you could hope for. I've broken several toes and that's what I did. Take some excedrin or aspirin, tape it up and give it a couple days and you will be just fine.

Injuries to the bones, muscles, and joints are difficult to diagnose in the field, and should be looked at if the pain does not go away quickly.

The basic treatment is RICE:

R- Rest the injured area
I- Immobilize the injury. It should be slpinted if you plan on moving it. You can splint a toe by taping it to the surrounding toes.
C- Cool the injury- apply ice packs for the first 20 minutes. After that, alternate ice and hot packs depending on what feels the best. Hot packs can stimulate blood flow, reduce stiffening, and break up swelling.
E- Elevate the injury to help minimize swelling

If it is just a strain, it will heal on its own. If it is a fracture, it needs attention. Don't use your brother's experience- people how routinely abuse their bodies will pay for it in the long run- ask any older football player with a messed up body. Heck, ask any 20 year old volleyball player about their knees!

what's wrong with your toe in the first place that requires a splint. You didn't say. If it's sprained or even broken a splint is required for immobilization for faster healing. U sually it is done involving the nearby digit.

Leave it on. Just because he's had a buttload of injuries doesn't make him an expert. The splint will leave the bones and muscles straight so they can heal right.

Go with the splint. The purpose of it is to keep the bones aligned so they heal straighter.
