Get engaged.
Set a date.
Write a budget (if you have limited finances or don't want to overspend).
Write your guest list-I recommend this first, because some reception halls, depending on the number of guests, will give you a discount if you go over a certain number of people.
Choose your wedding party.
Choose your reception hall.

There's LOTS more steps, but these are the first few. Go to the craft store (or amazon.com) buy yourself a wedding planning book and get to moving! It's so much easier if you have something laid out for you, step by step, with places to keep track of everything.

Step one: put your head into a diswasher and slam the door on it several times. This will get you used to the headache you will have for the next six months.
Step two: take all the money you can get your hands on in the next twenty four hours and put it into a paper shredder. This will get you used to the total waste of money a wedding can be.
Step three: sit your future groom down in a hard chair, lean in close and scream irrational comments and insults in his face for four hours, followed by dumping a large bucket of sewage onto his head. This will get him used to how he will feel every second until the wedding is over.
Step four: write the most shocking and insulting things you can possibly dream-up on a 3 x 5 index card and mail them to each and every friend and family member you plan to invite to your wedding. This will get them ready for the hurt feelings and anger weddings always generate.

Ya'll have a nice wedding, ya'hear?

definitely decide first whether you want a small wedding or a huge wedding, this can help decide on budget, where you can have your ceremony or reception. Secondly, reserve your ceremony and reception place, as sometimes churches or popular sites are booked months in advance. As said before, sometimes you have to change your date if the church you HAVE to have is booked. Ater the date and reservations are done start on the big things first, like photographer, I waited too long and didn't get the photographer I wanted (and I asked 5 months in advance), so if you have a photographer you want, book asap. Same goes for cakes, videography, etc. Hope this helps and good luck!

1) Figure out a reasonable budget
2) Get a planner
3) Talk with both sets of parents about the budget--together. Who's going to pay what, etc.
4) Talk to your fiance about what needs to be done--what does he want, what do you want.
5) Figure out a date and time. Note that cheaper weddings will be the ones on Sundays, Fridays, and weekdays.
6) Find locations and interview for costs and available dates.
7) Start a guest list
8) Think: bridal party
9) Start finding and interviewing vendors (food, cake, photos, etc).
10) Start looking at dresses and tuxedos

That should be enough to get you started. Just be sure to leave room in your budget for random little things you may miss!

You first have to find the place to get married and to have the reception! That will help determine the date! After that is done. you can start dress shopping, cake shopping, and all of that fun stuff! I recommend being engaged for a shorter period of time...
I am getting married in 2 weeks, our engagement will be 8months...and I am going crazy! It was easy to plan and everything, but it takes over your life and you can only take so much of that!

Tell your parents and Friends
Pick a date
Write a guest list
Find out where you are going to have it
Send out Save the Dates
Start shopping for a dress, registering, planning catering and cakes, picking out invites, finding flowers, and all that stuff
Send invites
Get RSVPs and go from there

Congrats and Good Luck!

Buy a Miss Manners book so you don't screw up your etiquette (don't rely on Internet advice, it is not reliable, an people remember your etiquette mistakes for generations!)

Decide how much you have to spend, then begin to create your budget based on that amount.

Then you work on from there.
