The more points someone has means that they have answered a lot of questions and usually the higher the points means that they have a lot of "Best Answers" chosen by the person asking, so they are usually more reliable than someone with very little points.

I'm not really sure, I know in the beginning it's so that you can answer questions so you don't run out of points to ASK questions with. It takes 5 points to ask one & 3 questions answered to make up those 5 points. I guess it could mean that you're more reliable though, because of best chosen answers. Or that you really have a lot of extra time on your hands to answer questions LOL
