It's great because it turns off to a warm setting automatically, so you have less chance of overcooking your food. I have a "SmartPot" and I love it.
If you don't want to invest in a programmable crockpot, get a regular one and then buy an appliance timer (like what you use to turn your lights on automatically) for $5 at any hardware store, and it works the same - your pot will just turn off instead of switching to warm.

I think the sentence is better than average based on what I usually see here, but the reason I'm here is to throw in my 2 cents about slow cookers. I bought a slow cooker from Walmart that I thought would meet my needs and it was cheap. It had a plastic lid with which I was very unhappy. Doesn't hold the heat well and looked very nasty after a few uses (Yes, I did wash it in between uses). I had to order a glass lid from the company and now I'm happy with the cooker, but it wasn't cheap. So, I should have bought the more expensive cooker to begin with. Good luck!

I have always used slow cookers and just bought a programmable one from Walmart and they are wonderful, well worth getting one and as usual you can either pre cook the ingredients or just shove them in raw. Enjoy.
