Can you be more specific as to the scripture?

well, I know that anointing one's head was an important part of preparing for something, giving blessings, or setting someone apart as something special. For example Samuel anointed David to be king. This was usually done with a few drops of olive oil - which has a symbolic reference to Christ's atonement (Gethsemani -the Garden where he prayed and bled - means olive press).

So not lacking anointing can refer to the prophet (or person of authority) should always have that oil with them to be able to perform the anointings...and/or you can think about it in the symbolism of the atonement sense, in that we should never be without the atonement in our lives.

Best wishes.

I cannot find such a text in the Bile but there were some when the oil was being poured on Jesus head who believed it was a waste, Jesus reprimanded them for it. also the people of that day felt it was unlawful to heal on the Sabbath, could also be what you refer to, keep studying. God Bless

This is a figurative example, or a word picture of someont who is at peace with God.

In Context:

Ecclesiastes 9:7-9 (Amplified Bible)

7Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart [if you are righteous, wise, and in the hands of God], for God has already accepted your works.

8Let your garments be always white [with purity], and let your head not lack [the] oil [of gladness].

9Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun--all the days of futility. For that is your portion in this life and in your work at which you toil under the sun.

Ecclesiates 9:8 - the white clothing and much oil is signifying purity. Solomon was saying that we need to enjoy life as God enables.

I don't know what text you're referring to or what bible you're reading, but here's one text that talks about this in Matthew 6

16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

What this means is that when you fast, you are going to be physically weaker and look like it. Don't play up the fact that you're fasting by not grooming yourself so you get attention. What you should do is fast and then make sure you don't try to get attention from anyone. Fasting is not about getting attention from people, but becoming spiritually stronger for a purpose and it's between you and God and no one else.

I believe it is anointing with oil. Lots of churches do it. Or it may be a spiritual anointing.
