You would not like my answer to this, as our own "sweetest dog in the world" pit bull nearly killed my 3 year old daughter (unprovoked)
He had never been treated harshly...and was a family pet..
its just that too many of them'snap' and harm people and other dogs..the good ones are the best dogs in the world..but there are too many that are untrustworthy..no way to weed the good from the bad..as you never know until it happens..

There are lots of reasons, not good reasons.
Both of these breeds are dominant dogs. They require socialization and training by someone that understands dogs. Not everyone that gets a dominant dog breed understands what these dogs need. And many people like and want a mean dog. These people are generally criminals. They want mean dogs so that they can protect their illegal activities or to fight them. These dogs are abused, neglected, isolated and many are ill.
I see more and more cities deciding to ban certain breeds of dogs but not the stupid people that create this poor psycho dogs. It should be a crime to be a poor dog owner.
I think moving was a great idea. If they attempted this where I live, I would move. Breed specific laws do nothing to stop the true problem here..... stupid people. I keep trying to figure out how to ban them. So far I haven't come up with much.

Rotts and pitbulls are the most mis-understood and mis-labeled dogs in the world. We have had both and the Pittbull we owned was one of the most gentle loving dog in the world. He met his un-timely death by a police officer who did not care and used his authority to kill an innocent dog that was on his own property and then the cop lied and said he had shot poor CoCo in the street. I witnessed it and it was awful to see two white fires coming out of the pistol of a gun and being shot into CoCo's head.
This male Pittbull, was only one year old. He loved the Postman and children. The reason these dogs have such a bad reputation is because there were some owners who mis-used these dogs. So they got a bad rap. Society condems all of this breed. They really don't realize that with a good owner and good training , these two breeds are Super Dogs.

To be honest, where I live there are no pittbulls at all. The only ones I have ever seen are in the pound and that's sad all on it's own. As for Rotts, i think they are beautiful dogs, none in this neighborhood either.
My brother had a Rott named Titan, when he moved he couldn't take him with, he really misses him.
I have a lab and would love to have a Rott. I think they would protect the house better than the lab.
Question for you. I've heard that females make better watchdogs is this true or are they equally in the job?
Thinking about it real quick, what happened to all the dobermans, I don't see any at all anymore.

We have a Rott (Konan) 2 yrs and a Pit (Idle) 7 months. They are a delight to own,we also own a tea-cup Pekingese that they love to play with. These breeds of dog are commonly misunderstood because of the types of people who raise them.Any dog no matter it's breed can be an aggressive dog if it's raised and trained improperly,I've known labs that could "kill" you if they wanted and poodles that will take a leg off.I also say alot of the problems come from "gang" or backyard breeders who breed aggressively trained dogs.People like this have givin these breeds bad names.I know I will never live without a rottweiler or pit bull in my life, they do require alot of attention and training but make great companions.

1) People are ignorant and lazy. Instead of researching a breed, it's easier to get sucked into the stigma that Rotties, Dobbies and Pits are "mean."
2) The media fuels the misconception that these breeds are more aggressive than other breeds by only reporting "Pit bull attacks child" incidents and not mentioning the THOUSANDS of other bite cases where fluffy, foo-foo dogs bite children. (Ask any small breed rescue organization - 99% won't adopt to families with small children for this reason!)
3) They're "scarier" looking than other breeds so that must mean they're "bad."
4) Some owners do get larger breed dogs - such as Rotties, Pits, etc - and train them to be aggressive... which gives ALL of these dogs bad names.
----
BTW - What "jxt299" posted is a complete and utter MISCONCEPTION and completely FALSE! Any breed of dog can suddenly "turn" on their owners if they're inbred in puppy mills or by backyard breeders. Any fluffy Pomeranian can have a chemical imbalance and start acting aggressive towards his owners. Dogs don't just turn on their owners for no reason. They're either being abused, in a stressful/fearful situation or have a medical problem.

In some cities they ban them because they use them for dog fighting which is illegal (that's mostly pitts though) and i heard from somewhere else that since a lot of them (pitts and rotts) are overbred which is like in a ghetto area when people walk them or have them out it can cause a problem where they might not be able to control them or can attack if trained to guard someting (which would be like drugs). It's mostly becuase there a big dogs and are mostly trained to do that. The law can't really go out and have only ceartin pitts and rotts in the city cause others could do the same.
I'm sorry about your dogs...

Because those are the breeds that are most liked for training to become a fighting dog or trained to be very aggressive. Unfortunatly some people in the government think its better to band a breed as apposed to dealing with the people who train these dogs to be aggressive.
I had a friend who owned a Rottie and a Pitbull they were the most lovable dogs that I have ever seen. I my self owned a Doberman and he was the kindest dog and when I would walk him people who cross the street so that they wouldn't have to walk passed me.
Some people are just too ingnorant to train their dog properly and to buy a dog for the right reasons. Unfortunatly some people only buy these dogs to look mocho and don't have the knowledge to train these dogs properly.

I own both as well and it makes me sick as well! It is the irresponsible owners who should be made to suffer, not the poor dogs.
There are more dog bites reported each year from daschunds alone than there are from Pits and Rotts combined. Yet I don't see anyone banning those dogs, or even blaming those dogs.
It's just criminal that these dogs have gotten such a bad wrap!

They are very dangerous animals! I was attacked by a Rott when I was two years old, it had me by the arm and was violently tossing me around like a rag doll, the owner had to punch the dog in the mouth to finally make it let me go. I have been terrified of large dogs ever since.
Tell me, can you get home owners insurance where you live with those animals? In my state you can't.

You're a good owner, but...
Do you trust everyone who might have these dogs to have gotten the dogs properly trained and socialized? Do you really? Have you ever seen three or four of these dogs running loose with no owner in sight? If you did, did you think twice about walking into the street where they were running?
