It could have been a number of things,
not enough fat
not enough liquid
you over baked it
the oven temp was too low so the cake baked too long
it may have just been a bad recipe

Check a site like Recipezaar.com or allrecipes.com to find a recipe that others have tried with good success. Also, try getting an oven thermometer to make sure your oven is at the right temp.

Don't over mix, and don't over bake. I usually slightly under bake (take the cake out 1-2 minutes early), and let the heat from the pan finish the job, So far, every cake I've made had come out perfect.

Add an extra egg, plus about 1/2 cup of sour cream

This is the perfect way to make a cake.......

Now i dont know about USA measurements but in uk this is what you do:
1. WEIGH THE EGGS. If the eggs weigh 8oz in total, use the SAME AMOUNT of butter, flour, sugar etc.

This will give perfect cake everytime.

some more butter, maybe an extra egg, and make sure not to overbake them - its so easy to overcook them when the top looks perfectly brown. So towards the end, pull it out a few minutes early and stick a knife in it to see if it comes out clean - if so, then it'll be nice and moist

Butter helps, but so does not over mixing. The more you work the batter the dryer for cake will come out.

Substitute applesauce for the oil you would use in the recipe. Taste great and very moist.

A cake made with mayonnaise (the real mayo, not miracle whip) comes out wonderfully!
