please DO NOT put a lighted ciggy or match against your dogs ear...or anywhere near the dog!
You can usualy tell if the 'lump' is a tick or not...take a little salt on your finger and apply to area..if the 'lump' shrinks, it is a tick, you can then try and release it with tweezers..however if you have never done this before consult your vet. Use fontline flea and tick controll every 3 month.

If you are uncomfortable addressing the issue yourself, then I recommend an emergency vet that can take care of the situation tonight. There are several ways to remove a tick, heat will work to get the tick to back out, but given the location I would not suggest that approach. Tweezers are the most effective method (and the method a vet would use) for tick removal, but you must be very careful when using the tweezers. When grasping the tick with the tweezers, be sure to grab it at the head. If the tick is not grabbed at the head, the head will remain lodged in your dog. The most important thing to do is remain calm and collectively hold your dog's ear and fur back to fully see the head of the tick and then get a good solid hold on the tick. Pull back firmly to remove the tick. Be sure to have something by you with oil in it to place the tick in.

I stated oil because the tick will suffocate in oil, which is why that is another solution that can be used. Oil does work effectively, it is just a little messier and you have to douse it well to make sure that no air can get to the tick.

I hope this helps.

Don't panic, dogs get ticks all the time..

If you use frontline put some of that directly on the tick, if not you can put a bit of tea tree oil or lavender oil on it, but it might take a few days to drop off.

You can remove it yourself but you need to be careful, if you just pull it off the mouth part can be left behind. To remove it get some tweezers, grab the tick and twist and twist and twist maybe 20 times, then it should just fall away, this is if your dog can sit still that long with tweezers in its ear.

One tick could stay on your dog forever and do it no harm at all, so don't rush to the vet as an emergency, the nurse will remove it for you, you don't even need to see the vet.

If you use frontline regulary it should stop ticks attaching at all, but it can be expensive!

You can also buy a tool to remove ticks, its like a little version of the claw bit on a hammer, useful thing to have if you don't want to pay for frontline or vets removing ticks.

Good luck, remember doggie won't even know its there!

PLEASE do NOT put a lit ciggarette in your dogs ear. Or any chemicals. If it's in the ear canal then leave it for the vet. If it's on the flap then spray it with some flea spray and wait an hour. After that grip it as close to the skin as possible with tweezers and pull. Check to see if you got the head. If you aren't sure if it's a tick then please leave it to the vet. It could be a mole which a lot of clients mistake for a tick. As a tech of 25 years I can tell you if you go in tomorrow without calling for an appt. and just ask the receptionist if a tech can look at it for you more than likely the tech will remove it, or tell you it's a mole and not charge you. If you call for an appt. then see the doctor they are most likely going to charge you an office visit. Give it a shot. It's better than pulling off a mole and making your dog bleed. Not to mention the pain it will cause.

If you can see & have access to the tick you can remove it, BUT it is important to remove the whole tick & not leave the head behind. My daughter has a knack & can just pinch it out (never fails either!) I do not, so dont attempt it that way, its said if you touch the end of the tick with the lit end of a cigerette it will "let go" & can be brushed off & I have to say that works for me but I doubt your dog will fancy a hot cigerette in his ear! When the tick is full it will drop off anyway so dont worry too much ok.
In the end prevention is better than cure, use a good anti flea protection that covers ticks as well & avoid walkin dog amongst bracken at this time of year.

People use to say strike a match and touch it to the tick and the tick would back out but I'm not sure, I guess it's worth a try. I figure all the vet will do is try to pull it out with some tweezers anyway, so try that.

depends where in the ear, if its outside and you can get it out use tcp, or vinigar or some alchol and dab it on with cotton wool to top of the tick, the trick is to get it to release its jaws as the bury their heads in the dogs skin. (they're horrible things) then with a pair of tweezers ease it out, trying not no break the ticks head off as if left under the skin can cause infection. (however ive done it loads of times and hasn't caused any problems). if its too far in the dogs ear your best leaving it alone until you can get to the vets tommorow, it wont cause any dammage, just the longer it's left the bigger it gets as it sucks more blood. but i wouldn't mess about inside the ear let the vet do that! good luck

Nail polish remover soaked into a cotton ball and held on the tick will loosen it. It's better than using a lit cigarette, which woks well and they drop off but Fido may not sit still for it. Also, cover the tick with vaseline. It smothers it and it loosens up also. When you yank it out be sure to grip it firmly and pull so you don't leave the head in.

its not a tick, ticks are crammed with blood not pus so theres the evidence. previous canines get 'epidermis tags' particularly many times, regardless of if my canines has them and there has in no way been pus interior so this could be an infection, possibly a grass seed has gotten into the exterior and brought about inflammation. you need to take him to a vet to get him checked over, besides as have his microchip scanned to be sure the place his (irresponsible) proprietors are. looking after a canines that's not yours is a superb and shows you to be actual animal fans. i could individually desire to thank you and your loved ones for being such splendidly being concerned human beings.
