Facing reality, or the truth necessitates that we all admit that we have not been able to live up to even our own moral expectations. We would have to admit that we screwed up and there is something in all of us that knows that if we screw up, we deserve death. In fact, the bad feelings that we have when we discover that we failed, however brief, are a form of death, ergo pain. Taken to the extreme, and without hope, real, physical death will result.

That's why we prefer to cover up our true selves and live in a shadow world of make believe, or darkness. We think that no-one can see us through our disguise, in the dark. This living will also result in our death, spiritually and eventually physically.

John 3:19 Amplified Bible
The [basis of the] judgment (indictment, the test by which men are judged, the ground for the sentence) lies in this: the Light has come into the world, and people have loved the darkness rather than and more than the Light, for their works (deeds) were evil.

Fortunately. Jesus took the penalty for all of our failure and mistakes. So that we might be able to face them and live in reality, the Light.

I can only speak for myself on this, but I think it may apply to others as well. I avoid the truth, because what other people say is the truth is more boring than what I invent in my head. For instance, I asked a question on this site: What is the viability of using Microchimeric cells in lieu of Stem cells? And I got a reasonable and probably truthful answer saying that Microchimeric cells have markers that prevent them from being useful in the same way that stem cells are. That is to say, one stem cell could be used for many different people because it doesn't have these markers. In my mind I want the Microchimeric cells to work so I don't have to turn on the radio and hear people fighting about using stem cells is like murder. If they could use Microchimeric cells --cells left behind in a mother's womb that live up to 40 years after birth, then no more using up public debate bandwidth for something that uses up our time better spent at figuring out, how the heck are we going to cure aids in Africa and still not have overpopulation starve that continents inhabitants. So in my mind the Microchimeric thing works because I don' care about the truth of the marker thing, I just use Mom's leftover cells to cure one person at a time: the person born of the mother whose cells went whacko after say 20 years outside of the womb. In my mind I simply go back to the womb cell well, clone a bunch of healthy cells and replaces the bad cells in the unhealthy child.
The fact that I am not a research scientist with years of experience and no funding, and only aging male with a BA in German makes no difference to me. All my patients are healed and I am happy, in a way, if not truthful.

Also imagine a book about it. Instead of A Streetcar Named Desire it is more like An Atom Bomb Called Truth. The science behind truth is just too dangerous so we leave it up to the experts.

Who's avoiding the truth? Can you be a little more specific? I try to be truthful in everything I do.

Because the truth hurts, and knowing the truth and admitting/hearing the truth are two completely different things.

I hate lying, but everybody avoids the truth at sometime in their life - and if you are telling me you have always told the truth, then I am here to tell you - you are a bloody liar !

I think avoidance is not an issue but rather which truth one would prefer to hang on. Most prefer God while some adventurous ones prefer science. Neither one would like to accept inferiority in their chosen "truth".

Because you use a picture of someone else for your profile. It's like you're avoiding the truth about what you look like. Sniff me?

Most people do not understand the truth, but for those who do they avoid it because it makes them uncomfortable.

What truth are you speaking of? Perhaps they avoid your truth but not their own.
If this is a serious Inquisition then my generic answer would be .. because it is easier to see what we want to see then what is really there.
