It is going to depend on what your fitness level is. If you can do 30 minutes to start, do it. If you can go for 40 do this too, the important thing is to pace yourself. I sometimes see people on the equipment beating themselves up when they first begin a program and then they don't return!
If you are a beginner start out slow and steady, then gradually increase, your body begins to burn fat after 20 minutes, so anything after this is fantastic. See what you can handle, then increase from there.

It takes 20 minutes of cardio to start burning your stored fat so the more you do the better it is for you. Go with 45 minutes and try to work up to an hour. That is the best way to get your body lean or keep it that way.

40 min is better.
But if your 30 min are tough then good for you!

60-90 is the ideal amount you should get a day, but 40 is not too bad!
