Try Grayhound. They do cross country trips. You can get a ticket at the bus terminal.

Greyhound is the only nationwide bus company, and you can only buy tickets at their stations. Yes, you can purchase them online, but you still have to go to the station to pick them up, and you have to pay a surcharge for that privelege. You're better off just going to the station and buying the ticket you need.

But, you can still use their website for checking schedules and stops, and for getting an idea of how long the trip will take. If you have the time and the cash, you might think about breaking up the trip into segments, and spending the night in some towns along the way. This will allow you to get some decent sleep and take a shower, as well as allow you to do some sightseeing along the way. Just a thought.

Are you crazy? I can't believe no one has suggested this. Taking the bus that far would be a week long! For that length of time you need showers and food! omg!

AMTRAK AMTRAK AMTRAK the train is soo much better. You can actually get a ROOM with a bed and they have showers. They have a lounge, a store, a restaurant (you get all free meals if you are traveling in a room) and unlike the bus you actually have room to walk around.

I loved Amtrak so much - it was the most unique and fun thing I had ever done. The trip in itself was the best part- so much better than flying.

I checked and rates for Amtrak for that route are as follows:
I entered from New York City to Los Angeles. Just like flying you will have to switch trains at least once. It says it will take 3 days but knowing them it will be closer to 4. But again you have a room with a bed and free meals so it's a thousand times better than the smelly bus.

$184 one way - One SEAT no room
Stopover in Chicago

$748 one way - The most basic room
Stopover in Chicago

$1,892.00 one way - The fanciest room
Stopover in Chicago

For one person (or a couple) the basic room is enough. It has 2 bunks and during the day they fold to make 2 seats plus a table. Little bit of room for luggage but you can check some of it. You will get a porter who can make your bed for you and fold down the seats for you as well as bring you lunch.

In comparison Greyhound rates are as follows:
Also takes 3 days
$191.00
$139.00 if purchased 7 day advance ticket
No showers
Several stopovers
No room to walk around
No food
No beds

But if you do take the Greyhounds their layovers dont have showers or bath. When I went to Florida ( departing from Los Angeles) after Katrina hit around the 26th of August and it took 5 days there were no shower/baths stops. The bus smell of funky sweaty people. I had to take the bus because there were no planes flying due to Katrina.

Go Greyhound and leave the driving to that smiling cat on TV. From the US it is easy to book a ticket online. I don't know about other countries. Consider taking Amtrak.
