he tried to use pointilism in his work, but he wasn't very good at it, and he created his own style, of long jagged lines.
those days, he had very nice work.
His manic depression/bipolar often showed in his work in the use of certain color patterns. He did a bar that he frequented in complementary colors (all adjacent to each other in lighting, the floor, the mantelpiece, everything, even the people and the bar owner) and it was very vivid, and it jumps out at you. I can't think of the name of that piece. Wikipedia it, you'll know it when you see it, by this description.
He was also very into Japonism, which is where a lot of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists lost their minds with Japanese arts and prints, and everyday life, and tried to imitate it to their fullest capable being. Van Gogh really really did and in one self-portrait, you see his shaved head, where he has decided to even become a Buddhist Monk.
if you wanna do a self-portrait in a Van Gogh type of way,
look at some pictures of 18 century Japanese clothes, and dress yourself in it, in the picture. (he made himself a monk, you could do that. (though he really became one)
look in the mirror. it's more accurate than even a picture, when you start to draw.
use quick lines instead of Pointillist dots, and pay attention to bordering them with their color complements. You may have to study Van Gogh's pic for that, and see how he did the shadows and light spots on his face.
good luck tell me if you get an A+

Go to the library, they will have books about Van Gogh for you to read and study. If you do a web search for Van Gogh, you will find examples of his art so that you can understand the style.

Firstly his name is van Gogh, first name Vincent, born in Holland. He had a brother named Theo and in his lifetime he only sold one painting. He cut off his ear to give to a prostitute as a present when he was living in Arles in France. Later he painted a self-portrait with his ear bandaged. Sorry I dont know which ear it was. There is a Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, maybe they can help you with more information. I hope you can use this.
