There are many different mental illnesses and each one has specific symptoms. The first signs are very different depending on the illness. So if you are concerned with somethink specific that you think could be a first sign of something, it might be a good idea to mention what that is so that people can provide information on whether it's a first sign of some mental illness.
If you're just generally interested in knowing what the first signs are you might as well to go ahead and read about some common mental illnesses and mental disorders.

Firstly on behalf of so very many people may i correct you.
"Insanity" as you put it is a slag and extremely derogatory term for any type of Mental Illness.
As every-one is an individual the onset of Mental Illness varies from person to person depending on various factors.
The onset of any characteric changes in personality whether gradual or rapid should be investigated by ur dr. as soon as possible the same as any other illness.
INSANITY from where i stand is the present state og the world today...
The Wars with all its needless bloodshed, famine all around the world, Prejudice of any kind and so the list goes on.

Insanity is a legal term not a medical term. As to mental illness that can vary. With schizophrenia it can be delusions ( holding onto a belief that is not founded in reality), hullucinations ( seeing or hearing something that is not there). Other forms od dementia can appear as sudden attacks of fear (panic attacks) loss of memory, color distortion, or lack of emotive response( not reacting to what is going on around you)

Insanity isn't really a psychological term, but it usually has to do with when a person loses complete touch with reality and with what is right or wrong behavior. It can be accompanied by hallucinations and delusions.

Its usually started with strange behaviour, having delusions and having excessive obsessions with things. You may also begin to have severe depression and anxiety. At the point of insanity your brain does not function properly and therefore may be admitted to a mental institute for treatment.

You have a right to know. It occurs when the patient can't decide over 50 percent of the time what to do. It is noticeable to others. If you reached this point then protect yourself and be safe. You better read some of my stuff too.

If you are worried about yourself, my advice is to talk to someone who knows you really well (parents, good friends, significant other). They will be able to recognize if you are acting out of character (hallucinations, delusions). But my advice is if in doubt, see a doctor.
