Check out www.samyeling.org, it's a Tibetan monastery and centre for learning in the Scottish borders.
Try looking up FWBO (Friends of the Western Buddhist Order). I have attended courses at the Manchester centre, www.fwbo.org/manchester
and found all the Order members and Friends very open and informative. The FWBO was founded by a Westerner and applies Buddhism in a relevant way to our lives rather than it being quite abstract and strange.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

BuddhaNet http://www.buddhanet.net/index.html has a very good introduction what Buddhism is as well as more "advanced" (as in someone interested in studying) set of guides.
http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/index.htm Anyway, BuddhaNet is my favorite.
There are quite a few different sites on it, but I like this one best. If you've got a local library, you can usually find a few good books. I like stuff from D.T. Suzuki (a Zen Buddhist from Japan), but mostly because I like the Rinzai Zen school of thought he was from and because he wrote things in English. Translations are okay, but hey. It's hard to find a basic "what is it?" book on any religion or philosophy, really. Most religious/philosophy books seem to be geared for people already in the religion/philosophy who want to deepen their experience or whatever.

yes theres a really gud one, bout tibetan buddhism, based around a retreat in scotland, run by venerable lama yeshe losal. Dont want to put the address on public view as there seems to be a lot of closed minds around here. contact me at my email for the address. Not bein funny, just begun to learn about it myslef, and know there are a lot of doubters out there who wish to be negative. If you think its something you would like to know more about, just email me.

You might want to check an overview site first, because like all established religions and philosophies, there is more than one branch. Below are a couple sites with a good overall definition.

I'd try reading the Dalai Lama's "How to Practice the Way to a Meaningful Life." I know it's not a website, but it has some good context. You ought to try it.

Will be plenty, but doesn't teach people that their life has little importance? Playing right into the hands of powerful people with that.
