I was at school with a gril who always wore a small, triangular, blue head covering. I discovered that she belonged to a faith called (the) Brethren. Being an inquisitive girl I asked her a few questions about her faith but she wouldn't even look at me let alone answer my questions. Another friend of hers told me that she wasn't allowed to talk about her religion.

My question is therefore, what do they believe? and if they are not allowed to talk about their faith, how do they 'convert' people? Or are you just born into that faith?

Your input would be most helpful.

I used to work for the Brethren and they believe that they are the only correct interpretation of the bible.

they believe that the Devil comes through the air, that is why they won't have TV or radio.

they don't celebrate Xmas or birthdays and they try to keep themselves seperate from 'worldly people'. ie.. people like you and me. even to the level of having a sewer pipe that is seperate and a detached house.

they won't let people who are not of their faith eat with them, they are anti smoking and they dress conservatively, the women are never allowed to cut their hair as long hair 'is a womans crowning glory' the headscarf is a token they belong to god, they don't like men with long hair.

they believe in strict interperation of the bible, interestingly Aleister Crowley came from a Brethren family!!

All in all they are a little anachronistic and weird in the modern world, but they are nice enough people reallly.

I went to a Plymouth Brethren college and have had contact with many, still do. They are Christian, born-again. They are closer to the original New Testament church in that they firmly believer in the priesthood of all believers. They do not have pastors, just elders. Anyone in their services can sing a song, speak what God has placed in their heart, etc..They tend to be very exclusive, that is, they don't often reach out to the community. They are also some of the best Bible teachers, they know the Word very well.

they are mainly born into the faith now because they have little to do with the 'world'. they own many businesses and are often multi millionaires but living very simple lives.
they started in the early 1800's and have a long history, in the last 50 years they have got very wacky and superstitious for instance they do not use fax machines because of some strange reason, but they are happy to use someone elses fax machine!
if you wanted you could try to go to one of their meetings but you may not be allowed in or asked to observe only.
they may even announce your presence by name.
Good Luck

The Anabaptist-Pietist Brethren, and even other Brethren bodies, share many beliefs. Individual articles contain more specific information of the doctrines of various bodies.

I'm not sure what the Brethren is. But Brethren means brother so why is a girl in it? WAIT!! You said she wasn't allowed to talk about her religion so how did you get that information?
