My understanding is that agribusiness outperformed Mexican farmers and essentially drove them out of business, much as has happened to the family farm in this country, except that our family farms get US farm subsidies. My understanding is that when beans and corn come under NAFTA another huge wave of illegal immigrant pressure is expected.

However, if the North American Union goes through, my understanding is that Mexico's energy sector will be open for development by the Union (read, US oil companies.) Currently Mexican law forbids private investment, not to mention foreign investment. That may or may not hit immigration so much, since the Mexicans who would work the oil fields don't own the means of production as the Mexican farmers did. Still, I think it explains Bush's desire to open our borders and form the North American Union.

I have heard that NAFTA did not benefit Mexico, and since it doesn't seem to be benefiting the United States either, well...why don't we just get rid of it?
