Depends on what the spare key is for.

House keys. Purchase one of those fake rocks with a false bottom (hopefully there are other small rocks in your yard to camoflauge it) and place it in your yard, front or back.

Car keys. Purchase one of those magnetic key holders and place somewhere under your car where you will remember it. A friend of mine had his under the driver side front wheel well.

Other types of keys would need other ideas. If it's for a lock in your home, gate or yard... try someplace in the house, a specific drawer, hanging spot or cabinet.

I have my best friend, and my sister each holding a complete set of my keys. As far as keeping spare keys around the house, I would say maybe in back of the silverware drawer. Maybe taped to the the bottom of one of your kitchen drawers. The living room and bedroom normally get ransacked, but not the kitchen to much.

I put mine in a drawer with all of my key rings. It takes up the better part of the drawer, so inside the drawer, I put a shoebox, and that acts like a divider.
What's important is to have a "home" for your keys. You always keep them there - never put them down anywhere else. That way, if you need them, they will definately be there, and wi twill beit is easy to find them. Sometimes, if you feel more comfortable hiding them in a location where other people can't find them, just put them in a corner of your sock drawer, or underwear drawer.
When you need them, you'll know just where to look.

I hid mine in my garage somewhere. Becase my garage requires a pin code to open the door, i can am more confident that the spare is safe. It is a good practice to also move locations once in a while, just like changing your passwords often.

In the most incospicous place, preferrably somewhere only you would know where they are hidden. If you tell someone, then move it to a different location.
