The short answer is, yes, your dog understands you.In some ways, your dog understands you better than you think. When dogs communicate with one another, they're attuned to sounds and smells, but also to the subtle changes in ear positions or tail positions. And they're checking you out just as closely as they do other dogs or that buzzing fly.
They are all about subtext, not text, Dogs are observing if your head is ******, if your body is leaning forward or backward, and where you're looking. And they're listening to how you say a word rather than knowing what a particular word means. They are making sense of their world through reliable associations. They understand which body movements of their owners lead to happy times for themselves: walks in the park, treats and petting.

Well, there are many books and beliefs out there regarding what pets, and animals, can really understand. Whether it's the tone of what you say, or the fact that you say it often, I can't tell you for sure. I do believe that animals have a '6th' sense and can feel things humans cannot. This is evident when they can sense natural disasters and such.
Also, I have a cat at home, and my wife and I speak to him like he can understand us, because we both feel that he can. The funny thing is, he responds back to us with meows. And... when he is speaking to me, his meow is different than when he speaks to my wife. When we tell him we love him, he comes up to and bumps hid head against our legs or whatever he can reach, which we have come to understand is his way of saying he loves us back.
There is a great book that we purchased called (well, we can't find it now, when I get home from work I will look for it and put it here). I recommend reading it over if you want to better understand your pets. Of course, if someone is close minded and doesn't believe in those types of things, then they will tell you differently. I just happen to think that animals are very smart and very sensitive to their owners and can communicate and understand them to a degree.
I would keep telling him what you tell him now.

My dog understands most words in the English language and if I use a word he is not familiar with, he cranes his head sideways as if to say "what?". He knows all of his toys by color and name. He gets excited when I tell him the names of friends and family coming over-he starts going to the doors and windows to look for them. He is so smart when we go out of town I cannot even take out my suitcases until the last minutes or he goes nuts! I love dogs! He is a Yorkie.

Your dog understands a few phrases that you repeat over and over. Things like "good dog," and "Go for a ride."
Mostly, though, your dog understands the tone of your voice. If you were to say "Dumb dog!" in the same tone as you say "Good dog," your dog would get just as excited.

the breed i raise has great ESP capabilities, so they know when i am thinking concerning them..It is much of the reason i am fascinated by them...just blows me away!
However, my little mutt dog, even understands spelling! When we spell (to keep her from understanding) she picks up on it and gets all excited..Dogs raised in the home, with constant human companionship, pick up a LOT of language..A dog can have the understanding capacity of a 4-5 year old child...They have been tested to have as much as a 700 word vocabulary..
people who have little or no verbal communication with their dog would never discover this....Such a shame..
this one has a 200 word vocabulary> http://www.eurekalert.org/features/kids/2004-06/aaft-ad020805.php

Well, I think that a dog is a very understanding creature once you get to bond with it, all animals are like that, they might not understand what exactly what ur saying, like if you saying "Like oh my god Rick was like, so checking out my hot bod today! Do you think he's like into me?" I think they understand emotions that you say with your words. Like if your sad, they're sad too, you know? So I think that if you pay attention, they do (after a while) understand you.

Have you never had a dog lick your face when you speak lovingly to it? Sure they understand, maybe not entirely, but enough. If a dog cannot understand what is said to them, then how do you explain a dog responding to verbal commands?

Well, dogs do not speak English. However, if you repeat something enough with the same behavior, they will know what it means and they will respond.
For instance, if every time you say "sit" and the dog sits you give him a treat, he for sure will learn what sit means!!

yes dogs are very smart animals. My dog knows when im mad at something, then he wouldn't even come near me. Last night, I was drunk, and couldn't open the house door. My dog knew i was outside. He went in and woke up my g/f to open the door. I LOVE HIM

Yes, of course. animal had emotion too. Like whenever i pack my bag to go for vacation. My dog will had tear on her eyes. And when I come home she'll be jumping up and down ask me to pet her and follow me everywhere.
Actually, pets are just like your kids. If you pay more attention to them, both of you will understand each other more!!...
