Try getting some of your Sunday-School kids in on this one:
Take some jelly jars and cover them in crepe paper, or decorated newsprint (the Sunday funnies work great). Just dip the paper in a half and half mixture of glue and water, and wrap around the jars. This will evoke all those school art projects.
Go to one of your local art or teacher's supply stores, and find extra-long pencils and pencil toppers. Get some daisies, carnations and/or mums and cut the stems so that they are slightly shorter than the pencils. Arrange them in the jelly jars.
This entire project will cost less than $2 per centerpeice (even less if you get the jars at a thrift shop, or if you already have them).

Depending on the size, you can create centerpieces using the following material in a wedding cake shape using Styrofoam circles as the base.

1. Regular Pencils
2. Colored Pencils
3. Crayons
4. Markers
5. White Chalk
6. Colored Chalk
7. Erasers
8. Colored Markers
9. Dry Erase Markers
10. Glue Sticks
11. Kids safety scissors
12. Kids Compasses

All the stuff can be donated to the church Sunday school program afterwards.

How Sweet!
Why not hunt for some old tin lunchboxes and fill with your choice of flowers. You can also hollow out red apples and place tea light candles inside. If you have a hard time finding these lunch pails you can purchase plastic lunch boxes and paint them with spray paint that is for plastic finishes. Then use elaborate stickers that you can purchase at Michael's (not cheesy) to decorate appropriately. Have Fun!

Why don't you carve some different kind of gourds sort of like making a jack-o-lantern but in a more festive patterns. Then place candles inside that way you get the candle look, but at the same time u continue the theme. make sure you use different types and sizes of gourd. I suggest medium/small pumpkins, acorn squash, and and any other small decorative gourd. You could also carve you and you grooms names in the side of the gourd.

See if you can get old school photos of the people coming( or of the church staff), photo copy them, and use them as a fun conversation starter/ centerpiece.

How about a small floral arrangement and tuck school pencils in? You could set the arrangement on a tablet of paper...
