Why do Americans call fringes 'bangs?' where does that word come from? where does 'fringe' come from?

Im from England, everyone i know calls it a fringe, maybe its just my part of the country!!

im scotland too its a fringe here as well i love girls with super blunt cut fringes very rare these days

Who calls them 'fringe'? I've never heard that before. And I don't know why Americans call bangs, "bangs". Why do some people call flip-flops thongs? Who knows?
