I've taken 2 basic classes and intend on taking more. I've assisted a friend of mine who is a pro and I've done 3 jobs on my own (volunteer) for major organizations in my town.
Do i need to know about lighting? light meters? how to work a lot of equipment? digital processing?

You need to know everything, because the photographer is just going to keep barking orders at you and not explain anything. They expect you to do everything! Yes you must know lighting, light meters, computers, memory cards, flashes, fashion, makeup, and everything else under the sun. It's a terrible job. You do all the work, get next to no money, and none of the notoriety. But it's the only way into the biz. If your lucky, you will find a nice photographer to work for that will actually teach you how to do things the right way.

Learn every technical detail you can, but don't shut out your creative instincts. Your technical knowledge will establish your credibility to the point where you can say to your shooter, how about we try this?

Trust me, your creative input is really valuable and will result in a better finished product.
