It depends. If its in a lot of pain, personally, I might euthenize it just so it wouldn't have to suffer. If its just old though and not as healthy but it is happy, just let it go naturally.
I believe in the same thing for humans ;D

This is totally up to how the dog is, if they are in pain then it is not humaine for them to suffer and would be better off put to sleep. It is also how you feel and can handle the situation. You should never let anyone suffer just because of your own weakness, this is too cruel. If the animal is just getting old like we do and you can manage the sick part then let nature take it's coarse but if this is to much for you well let the poor animal have peace and let them go home for a long awaited rest. They will only get worse if you make them hang in there just for own feelings, they ahve feelings too and just cannot tll you in words but they are telling you in another way with their actions. Let the poor animal go, it's the called tough Love but you will be better for it. Get another and you will be able to get over the grief alot sooner and allow a home for another unwanted animal. Once a dog lover always aLover of all animals. Good Luck and I feel for you, I have been there before. It will get easier later on, I promise.

If the animal is terminally ill (i.e. cancer) and doesn't have much quality of life any more -- can't move, urinate/deficate on its own/won't eat/is in pain or serious discomfort, etc. then I believe in euthanasia.
A dog that can't get around and do it's normal, happy thing is not enjoying life anymore. There is no reason to make it suffer just because a person can't bear to let it go.
If, on the other hand, they are still getting around, eating, doing their thing (maybe just a little slower, or with a little help), and still have that "spark" in their eyes, then let them be.
I wish my old guys would go naturally, but it always seems like I have to make the decision sooner or later, because there is always a health problem involved that is sapping their life away. You have to base the decision on what's best for the dog...
This isn't an easy decision. Good luck!
ADDED: Chetco, you made me cry! Good thing most of my coworkers are on vacation. :)

If the dog is sick like in pain then you should have him euthanized. Don't let him suffer.

go with your heart on this one. of all the dogs i've had since childhood we never let them suffer we euthanized. granted it may have taken us awhile to do it but it was the right decision. it hurts to see your beloved pet in pain or blind or on so much medication. you will know what is right for your pet and you. with ours it was almost like they were telling us it was time.

May I go now
Don't you think the time is right?
May I say good-bye to pain-filled days
and endless lonely nights?
I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be,
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first.
I fought with all my might!
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.
I want to go! I really do!
It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day .
To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and are afraid
because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.
Thank you so for loving me.
You know I loved you too.
That's why it's hard to say good-bye
and end this life with you.
So hold me now, just one more time,
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

If he's old but still getting around and isn't in pain, and still can do things that he enjoys? I wouldn't intervene.
When it gets to the point where he's in unmanageable pain, or he can't do the things he enjoys, or his quality of life has deteriorated to "poor", then the humane thing to do is to end his suffering.
Just being "old" doesn't qualify, IMHO. Our dog was 17 and still got a lot of enjoyment out of life... just at a much slower pace.

If the pet is to the point where they are not able to eat, drink, walk or pain. I think the most humane decision is to put the pet to sleep

If she is terminally sick, and in a lot of pain and really uncomfortable, I'd put her down as a last act of love. No reason for her to suffer.
