Notice how "Peace" didn't try to answer the question and directed me to an Islamic website that didn't have ANYTHING to do with my question? All I can say is "birds of a feather". False prophets are sneaky!

Looks like NVQ has fallen for it hook, line, and sinker. "Started from scratch"? No, he took parts of Judaism, Chrsitianity, and mixed it in with the pagan customs of his people.
Also, there were many differing Korans until someone decided to make an "official" Koran, and discard the differences.
I could go on and on about NVQ's mistakes, but I'll save that for tomorrow ;)

Excellent, perfect, "cut to the heart" question.
Certainly a person who did things which are commonly held to be crimes in civilized countries. Like pedophilia for example or Murder or Terror. Owning slaves is another, certainly a person who owned slaves is not the best and holiest example of conduct....i mean, if thats not the most obvious litmus test, then there is none.

A prophet claims to have a message from God. If you think he is a true prophet you believe that he is giving instructions from God and you must obey. This is obviously a very dangerous situation.
I think that all prophets are false, because I can't see why God would put us in such a ridiculous position, giving some people secret information and keeping the rest of us in the dark and making us try to judge whether it is true or not.
Obviously a prophet is false if he claims to work miracles, says that he has seen god or says the end of the world is coming on such and such a date.
Obviously he is false if he asks for money, sexual favours or unquestioning obedience.
Any prophet who has an opulent way of life, exerts power over others, or does harm to people is a false prophet.
This does not mean that anyone who does none of these things is true. That would be impossible to decide, which is why I think you should assume they are all false.

Hmmm, just my thoughts but someone who is a false prophet is someone who is attempting to gain from another's conversion and either uses scare tactics ("you will rot in Hell if you do not believe me", "we need your gifts to survive, by sending us x number of dollars you alone could be the one to keep our ministry alive", they preach to you that you must follow God's Word but they turn around and commit adultery, gossip, exhibit road rage :) ) etc, or becomes increasingly insistant that you listen to what he has to say or else.
If you think someone is a false prophet? Good chance they are...if you were wrong? Another will be along shortly.

One would be if they predicted something and it didn't happen. God is always right, and if someone is a prophet, he or she should be getting their predictions from God. Another would be if what they teach doesn't agree with the Bible. Then, you would know that they cannot be prophets. Finally, their lifestyle would be a good indicator. The way a person lives, his or her actions, and the conversation he or she engages in tells you quite a bit about that person.

That what they predict will happen doesn't happen.
That what they say is contrary to the written Word of God
That those with the gift of Discernment of Spirits, Word of Knowledge or Word of Wisdom are told by The Holy Spirit that the prophet is false

The best way to tell if someone claiming to be a prophet is false is that their prophecy's don't come true. All the prophecy's in the bible have came true and are still coming true to this day!! False prophets are exactly that they make false prophecy's

The words of any purported prophet must line up with God's word. One wrong prophecy is all it takes to declare them false.

I guess the following can be good indicators:
1) If he or she asks his fellowers to donate money to his "mission" occasionally.
2) Teaches immoral values such as incest, bestiality, sex with minors etc.
3) Suggests the building of a community in a remote area or country.
4) Preaches the necessity to kill oneself for the sake of religion.
5) Performs a "miracle" act in public and asks for cash donations in return of that act.
6) If he or she lives in a life of luxury while his or her fellowers are told to slave for him or her so as to gain salvation.

#1. Do they follow their own teachings.
#2. Are they in conflict with the Teachings of Jesus?
#3. Are they teaching Love, Peace, and Harmony?
After the new Covenant and Jesus, there is no need for any more prophets.
