I am really having trouble with it lately...I am forgetting everything and I am zoning out a lot....Its affecting my relationships....

My question is, I dont want to take medication, does anyone know how to manage this condition with behavior modification? Or any other method to manage this condition?

I want to perhaps, do something myself, instead of seeking help via medications.

What do you suggest? thanks in advance....

I feel your pain. I am an adult with ADD as well.

ADD is a disorder that stems from brain chemical dysfunction, namely an imbalance of a neurotransmitter called dopamine. All the behavior modification in the world will not "cure" it anymore than behavior modification would help an insulin-dependent diabetic "cure" their diabetes.

Omega 3 fatty acids can help a lot (fish oil or flax seed capsules) as can vitamin supplements, especially the B vitamins. Grape seed extract helps, as does cutting out sugar and processed foods and avoiding alcohol.

There are some other things that can alleviate the severity of the symptoms, chief among them being intense exercise. The problem, however, is that it is difficult for people with ADD to stick to anything that is unpleasant or that they are not highly motivated to do.

There is nothing wrong with taking medication if you need it.

I recommend reading addforums.com for lots of other adults with ADD. You're not alone! It will help you decide what is best for you!

Your Depression could be a symptom of your ADD or your ADD could be a symptom of your depression.

For your child's sake, you need to address your depression as soon as possible. ADD is one thing, but when you start down the road of depression and begin emotionally disengaging yourself from life and those around you, that's a dangerous thing, especially for you.

Go visit your doctor and get some Medication for the depression. This will allow you to take a step back from the depression and examine what in your life is truly making you depressed, and to remedy it if possible. If there is no remedy you may need to seek therapy in order to learn how to cope with the problem successfully.

As for the ADD, Get more sleep, try to pay more attention to your surroundings. As soon as you notice yourself drifting or being distracted, drag yourself back to what you should be paying attention to. I imagine that your ADD will lessen when you take care of the depression. When possible, try to limit any distractions around you that might keep you from your task. If your child asks a question for instance, shut off the T.V/Turn off the music, and speak to your child.

P.S. Ritalin is a form of Speed/Cocaine. And people/children are often Diagnosed with ADD/ADHD incorrectly. About 80% of the children on Ritalin or another form of meds for it have been misdiagnosed by Doctors because the HMO's don't want to pay for the ADD/ADHD testing.

I think the best bet would be to do a few things..

A. Start by getting a thorough physical.. Make sure it is not anything physiological.

Make a list of concerns then.

B. See a counselor - may be helpful in dejumbling the thoughts

C. See a psychiatrist if the above two aren't working
