Absolutely, check into the pros and cons of every breed as they are all different before determining which is best for your household. If you have kids you will want to look at how the breed responds to kids. If you have other pets you will want to know how the breed responds to other animals. Do as much homework BEFORE to ensure you are a good fit for the dog as well as it being a fit for you.

Congratulations on yuor new puppy!

This is a very bug commitment and what I would do is go to www.akc.org and read up on the breed of dog you are getting.

You will need a lot of supplies.
Food and water dishes
Food and water
Chew toys [ a lot.... teething puppies are a pain! ]
Treats
A crate or puppy bed
A kennel [ one for your puppy's breed ] for traveling.
Pooper-scooper or just some plastic bags
Some extra $ for when you need shots from the vet or something
Leash and collor and then your just about set

Anything else that comes to your mind that you need.

tons.

instead of going into it on here get some dog and puppy books.

puppies for dummies helped us a lot when it came to deciding what breed to get, how to pick a pup from a litter, how to potty train....etc.

also, i recommend PetSmart's pet training classes.
we took our puppy to this and he did very well! it's been a GREAT help!
BUT, you have to do your homework and be consistent!

dogs are wonderful and our guy is truly our boy, but you have to really be dedicated.
i've missed tv shows bc he needed a walk, or gotten up in the middle of the night b/c he needed let out...so, just think about those things!

take care and i hope you find the perfect dog!!!

Pick a breed, research the breed a bit online. Def. look at where you live, some places dont allow certain breeds. If you live in an apartment you wont want a big dog. Small dogs are good because they dont need tons of space. I have a toy fox terrier and she loves being in the apartment. and small dogs poop smaller :D. Youll probably want to get a crate, and some stain remover incase or when the dog poops on the floor. you also want to take into consideraton your going to have to get the dog all its shots, rabies, distemper and others. theres alot of stuff to think about. :D I Love my puppy shes great...some trouble sometimes but Im def. glad we got her.

yes! start by watching cesar milan's the dog whisperer....most of the problems you will have he will address and tell you how to fix...but the most important thing he says is that once you bring the dog home, dont take it right inside...take it for a long walk around the neighborhood..he needs to be well excersized by you as pack leader so that when he goes inside for the first time he will not be excited and nervous...he is going to look to you for leadership and to know how you want him to behave..if he is nervous or upset do not pet him to cheer him up as this will reinforce the behavior you dont want....you must be pack leader or he will take the job...be firm but dont yell at him...calm assertive energy is what you want....good luck!

you need to know EVERYTHING...better start doing your research...which you should have done before getting the dog. Talk to your vet ask for resources and books new dogs owners should have. Talk to other dog owners, look on the internet...take everything in! Get a crate...it will help with potty training!

Yes... a lot. Go to the pet store and get a book on puppies and house training!
Also, look at the different puppies there and decide which one you want and do some research. Different dogs for different lifestyles...

The one thing you should know is, that dogs need a lot of love, exercise,a good vet,and training. You also need to socialize your dog. By bring him/her to the dog park. It teaches them to not fight with other dogs.
