that happens when you are running more programs than your RAM can handle so it is using part of your hard drive as RAM

to increase the virtual memory do the folowing
In the Control-Panel, select the System icon (or right-click "My Computer" on the desktop and select Properties)

Select the tab: "Advanced" and then use in the section "Performance" the button "Settings". In the Window "Performance Options", use the tab : "Advanced"

In the section "Virtual Memory", the system shows the total size
of the Paging file, which you can increase with the "Change" button.

You go to Start Menu.
Control Panel.
System.
And then click on the Advanced Tab.
Under Performance there is a settings tab.

You can increase your virtual memory there, but I wouldnt touch it because it usually allocates it the best way possible so that your computer and your graphics card gets the most from your memory.
It usually means you might need to upgrade your memory. Go to control panel again, then system, and then check your computer information and see how much memory you have. If you only have 128MB RAM, which is the standard that new computers come in, then you might need to add more RAM.
The more the RAM, the better performance of your computer. If you only have 128MB RAM then that basically means that you cant have much more than maybe 3 or 4 programs opened at the same time.
If you need more help or if you want instructions on how to install more memory, then contact me in my profile.

When Windows XP gets too low on virtual memory, it will warn you and also increase the virtual memory on it's own.

You can help by rebooting your computer once a week or more rather than just leaving it on.

Virtual memory is the block of disc space (swap file) Windows reserves on your HDD to swap running programs to when you run out of RAM.
If the free space on your HDD shrinks too far, windows runs into a problem with doing these exchanges.
You can improve things by adding more RAM (the best solution) but you definitely should get more disc space, either by wiping (or saving to an external drive) what you don't need, or getting a larger HDD. Check for best prices on RAM and hard drives at:

Go to your Control Panel. Select System Properties. Select the tab named Advanced. Choose Performance Options then Change. Now, you can up the virtual memory. OK.

It might be a little different if you have XP, but similar.

I would recommend having (or upgrading to) 512mb RAM or higher so you don't have to worry about memory issues like this in the future...plus, you would be amazed at how much faster the PC will probably run...
