Definitely stick with a dish you're comfortable cooking; first dates are *not* a time to try to be creative or stretch your culinary skills. Don't go too heavy on the carbs; aim for a bit more protein, or he'll just pass out afterwards while watching the movie, which is never a good end to a first date.
A good blend of some protein, some carbs, and a salad or some other vegetables is good. Avoid heavy, fried foods as well. Some nice grilled salmon, or a nice bit of seared sirlon, some pork cutlets, things like that will work better than fried chicken, for example. You want him awake and paying attention to you, not flopping back holding his stomach. ;)

As for the movie--have a few suggestions, one or two in each of a few major categories (romantic comedy, action, drama), but let him do the actual picking; it'll make him feel like he's part of the planning without confronting him with a whole cabinetful of DVDs with no ideas about your preferences.

Good luck with it!

Make a dish that you know how to make. And as for movie ask him what kind of movie he likes. Then pick one. Good luck and have fun.
