i guess the tough part of dealing with this is that it was an act of violence that was done to that family member. it is a scary thing when any family member is incapacitated and the rest of the family suffers from not knowing if the member will recover or not. there is suffering about the act on that person and the suffering about worry for their future.
The most important thing is to be sure that the friends and family can stay together, care for eachother. do not refuse when people offer to help you out or offer meals. talk about it among yourselves, do not try to avoid the subject so everyone tells eachother how they feel.
it is a very rough time but it can be a time to pull everyone together too.
