Has anyone found a trick to getting free candy out of these machines?

There was a default machine at a convient store by my house. It wouldn't need money to give you candy. No trick, just good fortune, I suppose.

Put a dollar in, it's like magic!
Oh, btw, do NOT shake them. A certain number of people die from that each year. REALLY embarrasing way to die.
Also most of them are maintained by private family owned companies. Not the "coke" corporation etc. You are trying to rob people who are generally just as broke as you are. That is jacked up. They are trying to make the American Dream happen by being their own boss and having their own company and you are trying to rip them off.
Don't be so cheap, just put in a dollar, or go without your candy.
