Hardly!
As it turns out, the proverb is from back during and before Cowboy days, when the American diet was incredibly constipating. In that day, doctors spent a lot of time going on house calls for folks with bellyaches, who were just suffering from major constipation; they'd give the poor soul an enema, deliver them of their load of hard, dried stool, and cure their "miseries" by so doing. However, even a modest amount of increased fiber intake, even as little as is in a good sized apple, taken daily reduced the frequency of such doctor's visits. Thus, that apple a day really did keep the doctor away.
There really wouldn't be all that much at stake if everyone started eating an apple or two a day. If you really want to raise a meaningful question, look at something that really does generate billions of dollars a year for the medical industry, and ask whether doctors are taking steps to maintain those billions of bucks or not.
Oh, can't think of anything that might fit the bill? I can.
Smoking.
The COPD, vascular insufficiency, macular degeneration, lung cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, myocardial infarctions and other things that are either caused or aggravated by smoking really do generate billions of dollars for the hospitals, for doctors (as a whole), and for the pharmaceutical industry. By the way, one of the most rabid anti-smoking groups out there happens to be the American Medical Association.
'Nuff said?

I do not think so it will be a threat to any pharmaceutical industry. Apple is researched-proven to be a good source of nutrition and antioxidants highly beneficial to the body. But antioxidants are not the only issue when we talk about health. There are tons of issues affecting ones health. If antioxidants are all the solution to every problem, well, everyone deserves to rejoice as eating apple can solve every health problem (AIDS,CANCER,ETC.??). But unfortunately the answer to vast health problem issues are quite complicated and people continue to make them more and more complex. So definitely, an apple a day is highly recommended but no guarantee imposed, so to say that pharmaceutical companies are still needed and will keep on growing so with an apple tree. "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away.", needs to be correlated with many factors to achieve the best usefulness it could give and implement the real meaning of such thought. Have your apple anyway, it is good for you!

An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away but paved the way for Newton's law to sway other physicists to believe in the power of the apple. LOL.

Did you know that the tobacco industry got a slap on teh wrists a few years back for promoting tobacco to small European countries as a way to "solve" their agging population delima (since they can't afford health care for the elderly).
Makes you wonder what different groups Don't get caught for.

But the only thing keeping that from happening (thank heavens) is that the claim is general. Had it been directed at curing a terminal illness, then the FDA would have come down hard on it.
So eat up, while you still can.

I refuse to take legal drugs.
I'm as healthy as an Ox.
I ate an apple once. It was on a Thursday.
I felt sick as a dog. It was full of chemicals.
It was genetically modified to stop me visiting the doctors.
Now, oranges, thats another story !

Yes it could, actually the apple seeds contain the precise amount of arsenic that will prevent/kill cancer cells if taken once a day in a dosage of all the seeds present in one apple!!!
