How many of you have allowed family to move in with you, and then later regret it? I let my niece and her boyfriend move in my basement I charge them $500/month they have use of everything including my car, their room is bigger and they have their own bathroom. They have it made, I clean their dishes, and cook dinner. These are adults I'm talking about too, she is 24, and he is 28. They do nothing to help out he sits on his butt all day playing video games, and sleeping. They recently had my sister call me to tell me the rent was too much, all they pay for is the utilites, and groceries my husband makes the house payment, and the other household expenses. What should I do? Do I tell them make on their own somewhere else or do I put up with it? I am at my wits end I have my own child to worry about. I need some advice. I feel like my genorosity is being taken advantage of but my sister fails to see it that way. Thanks to all with suggestions.

OMG dear, I feel so sorry for you. they are definitely overdoing it. You were kind enought ot help them out. If they wnt to become independent, then they should learn in the real world. first of all that bf of hers needs to get his butt out of the couch and find a job, instead of complaining that rent is too much. I think you need to tell them that they are not creating a very safe environment and they are not teaching your kids any responsibilites either, by your kid seeing them do nothing all day. Sorry I say give'em the boot! Thumbs up!

This sounds almost EXACTLY what happened to me with my cousin and her husband. We allowed them to move in so that we could show them how to handle money and run a household. Instead they just took advantage and sat there like lumps. When I realized that they were not learning anything and that they were never going to change, I gave them the boot. You can only do so much for certain people. Good Luck.
PS. Just a word of advice. Safeguard your belongings. Trust Me.

I think they either need to start appreciating how good they have it, or they need to go.

There comes a time when an "adult" really needs to become an adult and if they don't see the opportunity that you're providing them then they shouldn't be living there. Maybe it will take them trying to find a decent place to live (which I'm betting they won't for only 500.00... depending on where you live) AND paying all the bills to grow up and take responsibility for themselves. And I'm sorry, but if your sister isn't letting them live with her, then she shouldn't have a say in who does or doesn't live with you.

I wouldn't put up with it.

youre genorosity is being taken advantage of i hesitate to say kick them out cause they are family and that might be hard for u at the end of the day its youre call either way, weather its youre husband who gets pissed off cuz hes paying for everything or youre sister who gets pissed if u kick em out no one wins.let this be a lesson no good deed goes unpunished.

i can see letting your niece move in she is family. but not the boyfriend. he needs to be a man and get a job and get his own place. why is the niece living with you and not her parents? i say tell them to get their acts together and contribute or give them two weeks to find another place to live. besides, you don't want that kind of influence on your child.

Tell them that if they don't like the rent they can find some where else to live.

You need to give them the boot!
He's 28! Tell him to get his a** job!
They're obviously old enough to support themselves.
