TO make themselves feel better about what they did, and to sugarcoat it for others too.

Lie, it's just a human thing. People lie sometimes not to hurt a persons feelings, they lie sometime to stay out of trouble and some of us just lie because we can.

Would you like to understand from a biblical sense? Because it is part of human nature. The Devil, temptations, cause us to lie which is why Jesus was sent to die on the cross... to save us from our sins. God knew his people would lie because he understands that evil exists and will be portrayed in people through many sins, lying being one of them.

Now, generally, I believe the above AND people are just self-centered who lie. Others lie because they think the truth will hurt the person they are lying to. But really, the truth always comes out and to lie only gets people in trouble....

Most of the time, I think folks lie because it's really about something they wish was happening/happened. Some folks are just plain evil and think up stories to harm people etc. I hate when you are really sure you are being lied to and they lie about lying!!! Personally, I just pray for them and move on.

People lie to gain some kind of advantage which must be great enough to outweigh the disadvantage of being caught in the lie.

There are as many reasons why people lie as there are people who lie. Everybody has their own reasons at they time. It could be to keep from getting into trouble, to avoid hurting someones feelings, to keep people from knowing what you are really up to.....I can think of a thousand reasons. None of them are good "excuses" for lying, however, only reasons.

For most people, they lie to make themselves look better, like if they are making $10/hr and then they say their making $15/hr, they are going on lots of dates but really aren't seeing anyone. They feel to ashamed to admit the truth, especially since society puts so much pressure on us, they feel they have no other choice but to make themselves look just as good as everyone else.

most likely they did something wrong and are scared of the punishment or result that they think may come from their mistake. or maybe they are one of the people with the medical problem of being a compulsive liar, and lie for no reason

the lie because they feel that its the last first thing that can get them out of trouble but it really gets them into more trouble when the other person finds out about it.

Because the unregenerate heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Sadly, man has alienated himself from God and turned, each and every one, to his own ways.

The good news is that there is a cure. Read the gospel of John in the New Testament for this cure.

Grace and Peace to you

Sin nature. When God created Adam and Eve, he told them not to eat the fruit from that ONE TREE, but the devil came in the form of a snake and tempted her to eat one. She did, even though God told them not to. She said it tasted good, so she told Adam to eat some too. He did. After that they were afraid of God. But God knew what they had done. So he told them they could no longer live in the beautiful garden (I think it was called the garden of Eden). Read Genesis.
