is it something you need to buy for a play? or you have to price an item for a play you are in?

i would assume they would barter (trade for other services/items). before the war of 1812, people bartered with crops, tobacco, indigo, wheat maize, and gold dust to name a few. following the war, paper money was available.

i am not sure how you'd like to price the item, but knowing the payment choices in the 1800's may give you an idea.

Being in Kansas, I would suggest you Google Old Cowtown Museum and Boot Hill Museum and see if they have websites with Contact Us listings. They have general stores and bars set up like the Old West. Perhaps they would have done this research already.

Go to a history site on the web, or google it. If that dosn't work, make it up... just remember that 50 cents was A Lot. back then
