Liston was a tough fighter but was not a great champion.

Joe Louis was not the first black champion, Jack Johnson was and he belongs high up on this list as does Louis.

Floyd Patterson was not one of the ten best heavyweights of all time.

Neither was Foerman, Holyfield or Lennox Lewis.

Larry Holmes was 48-0 before he got screwed in a decision against Michael Spinks. He held the title for 7 years.

Jack Dempsey was a devastating puncher and did for the money end of boxing in the 20's what Tyson did for it in the 90's.

Gene Tunney beat Dempsey and retired undefeated as heavyweight champion.

Sam Langford and Peter Jackson were black boxers from the early 20th century who never got title shots. Boxing historians consider them among the greatest heveyweights ever.

James J. Jeffries held the title for about 7 years and retired as champion, he popularized the crouching style. Unfortunately, he most known for coming out of retirement to fight Jack Johnson to get the title back for the white race. He got beaten badly.

Drop Liston, Holyfield, Foreman, Lewis and Patteson. I'm not knocking them, I just don't think they are in the top ten all time.

I like your list a lot and respect your's and other's opinions but mine are a little different.
1. Rocky Marciano only undefeated champion at 49-0-0 43 kayos
2. Joe Louis heavyweight champ for almost 12 yrs and most title defenses
3. Muhammad Ali the fastest of the heavyweights and a record of 56-5-0. Fought a lot of great fighters too. Champ multi times.
4. Jack Dempsey may have been the hardest hitting champion of them all and a fierce fighter. Champion about 7 yrs.
5. Jack Johnson the first black champ and a defensive wizard! Champ about 7 years.
6. Gene Tunney perhaps the most underrated of them all. Had great footwork and boxing ability. Undefeated as heavyweight.
7. Larry Holmes almost tied Marciano's record and had an awesome reign as champion
8. Evander Holyfield was a multi champ and a great warrior who fought many good fighters in his career.
9. George Foreman had clubbing knockout power and probably the strongest heavyweight ever. Won title at advanced age too!
10. Joe Frazier had the most awesome left hook in boxing history and once defeated the great Muhammad Ali.
Honorable mention to Ezzard Charles, Sonny Liston, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson
.

Are you friggin' kidding me? Liston at #2? Holyfield 4 time champion? He "won" his 4th "title" after Lennox didn't want it with a robbery win over Ruiz of all people. Marciano didn't have the most consecutive wins as champion, it was Louis with 25 defenses. Marciano had 49 wins. Jack Johnson was the first black champion. You must be testing peoples knowledge of the sweet science because you were way off. A web site that is good to study on is www.boxrec.com I can literally read there all day long and not get bored, check it out.

I would put Joe Frazier in at #2, and Jack Dempsey in at #4 as he had been officially ranked a few times. He is certainly in the top 10 and it's just wrong to not include the Manassa Mauler - Jack Dempsey won 83 fights - at least 50 were knockouts! He was an aggressive fighter, stalking his opponents in the ring. His hands were life stone, his speed was like lightning. Lots of men feared fighting Dempsey, as he used to challenge men on the streets, in bars, lumberjack camps and mines. "I can't sing or dance, but I can beat any man here!" And HE DID. Sorry to see your list didn't include such a MAN.

i agree w/some of the others(but sorry, though tunney did retire w/the title, he was not undefeated, check his earlier history). lewis, liston, patterson do not belong in the top ten - holyfield, holmes barely. when you get down to it, though they have some impressive names in their win column, who did they really ever beat and what was the level of their competition? that's the true litmus test of a great, vice good, champion...this would also call marciano into question, but i will include him in the top ten, as follows:
ali
jack johnson
mike tyson
joe louis
rocky marciano(would be higher had he fought superior competition)
jack dempsey(would be higher had he fought the superior black fighters of his day)
george foreman(underrated jab when he started but went for the power instead)
joe frazier(would hold his own against almost anyone on this list(except foreman, of course))
evander holyfield(tough, but limited w/dirty tactics, in my view. a lotta heart, though -best fight was against riddick bowe!)
ezzard charles/gene tunney/larry holmes(maybe the greatest of all jabbers, and a lotta heart, but weak chin and inferior competition - his best fight was against an older ken norton!)

No! I'd say:

1. Jack Dempsey-speed, power, the Babe Ruth-Bobby Jones-Red Grange of boxing!!!

2.Joe Louis-"the brown bomber" says it all

3. Jack Johnson-the first black heavyweight champ, amazing reflexes, proud and strong

4.Marciano-the "rock!"

5.Muhammad Ali-superior speed for a big man...flawed technique but some much "chutzpah!' "the greatest!"

6.Larry Holmes-highly underrated. 6'4" power in both hands, wonderful jab, great cross-with a left hook he'd have been the best ever!!!!!

7. Gene Tunney-another underrated master...beat Dempsey twice

8. Ezzard Charles-always in shape, beat Louis...almost beat Marciano-the Cincinnati cobra, a true gentleman and great athlete

9. Jack Sharkey-a flawed fighter who looked like Dempsey but make no mistake, he could fight...perhaps too gentle to be a true pug...after boxing opened a restaurant/bar in Boston and became a celeb

10. Floyd Patterson-what a guy...a touch of intellect...his knockout of Johansson, when Johansson convulsed...so worried this wonderful guy his great power was rarely, if ever, seen again...peek-a-boo stylist and fastest hands after Ali-may your soul rest in peace

Nat Fleischer, who saw all from Johnson to Clay, believed Johnson was the best !

We'll never know! I always like the question, though! That's what makes horse races!!! (another favorite sport of mine)!
